Show Scouts Hold Four-Day Program At Pine Valley Camp Grounds Physical fitness and campcraft were featured in the four-day encampment en-campment of the Boy Scouts of the St. George district at Pine Valley last week from Wednesday to Saturday. The highlights of the program was the hike Thursday Thurs-day to Cabin Valley and Lookout Look-out Peak. Nearly 60 boys participated partici-pated in this hike, which was led by Dr. Ross Hardy, representing the Forest service. Shorter hikes and commando tactic games were enjoyed throughout through-out the four-day period. Raft and bridge-building out of ropes and materials found on the spot was taught by Leo G. Smith, who was also directly in charge of the camp. Mr. Smith also taught cold-water cold-water swimming methods. B. Glen Smith instructed in handicraft and cookery: W. Other leaders participating in the camp were Steve Kirkland, scoutmaster, scout-master, and Carl Moss, troop com-miteeman, com-miteeman, of troop 401. A total of 69 boys from the four St. George troops were present pres-ent at the camp. Visiting the camp were a Scout from Provo, one from Spanish Fork and two boys from LaVerkin. Eight boys earned merit badges in cooking during the camping period. They are: Charles Schmutz Dick Jennings and Duane Stauf-fer Stauf-fer of troop 402; Duane Bleak, Jay Barton and Jack Smith of troop 403; and Karl Snow and Gregg Snow of troop 404. These awards were recognized at a court of honor held Friday night. At the same court of honor session star awards were made to Jay Barton and Jay Lang and Life award to Jack Smith, all of troop 403. The camp officially closed with a swim at Veyo on Saturday afternoon. |
