Show Melvin M. Harmon Celebrates 76th Birth Anniversary Born In Salt Lake City, He Came to Dixie With Parents Par-ents In 1862; Spent Several Sev-eral Years In Mission Field Melvin M. Harmon, prominent in church affairs and civic affairs in St. George for a number of years, observed his 7 6th birthday birth-day anniversary at his home on Sunday. His children were all in attendance at the dinner given with the exception of two sons, Frank and Irvin who reside in California. One brother, Levi Harmon was also present. He was born at Salt Lake City, April 11, 1861, a son of Levi Nehemiah and Eunice Emily Harmon. He came with his parents par-ents to Dixie in the fall of 18 62 and spent his boyhood here where i he attended district school. He attended the B. Y. U., at Provo during 1883-S4-85. Taught school for 9 years in Washington county, taught one year at Kanarra and one term at Cedar City in Iron County. He was married May 27, 1891 in the St. George Temple by David H. Cannon to Alice Cannon Can-non Woodbury. He and his wife made their heme from ISO?, until 1S96 in the Sandwich Islands where their two sons, Irvin and Frank were born. ?.Ir. Harmon taught school in the winter and s-ptnt the summer doing missionary wci k. After his return he served in the High Council. After being be-ing heme eight years he was called cn another thre;-year mission mis-sion to the islands where he did missionaiy work and for awhile taught school. During the absence of the mission president. Samuel Wooley. who was called to America, Am-erica, Mr. Harmon presided over the mission. Following his return home he was again a member of the High Council. ITe was Rupt. of the East ward Sunday school for a number of years. Stake Tithing Clerk and from January 1915 until August 192S he served as Recorder at the St. George Temple. He was Justice of the Peace here and also a member of the City Council for a time. Mr. and Mrs. Harmon are the parents of nine children, eight of whom are living. They are: Irvin of Glendale, Calforuia; Frank of Fresno, California; Alice II. Ballard Bal-lard of Rockville; Vera Ilirsehi of Cedar City and Emily Fore-master, Fore-master, V e r n a Schmutz and George and Elmer of St. George. |
