Show I Pickett Contributes To Hurricane Library HURRICANE, Utah Ellis J. Pickett, district attorney at St. George, who during the world war was cashier at the State Bank of Hurricane, made a most substantial sub-stantial donation to the Hurricane City library on last Saturday. The much appreciated gift consists of an 11 volume set of "Double-day's "Double-day's Encyclopedia", a 20 volume set of "Messages and Papers of The Presidents", and several hundred pounds of used magazines ranging in kind from the "National "Na-tional Geographic Monthly", "Saturday "Sat-urday Evening Post", to "Life", "Look", "The American", etc. The periodicals given by Mr. Pickett were tied in bundles containing a full years subscription in each. As early as Monday afternoon marked inroads on these current publications had been made by patrons of the library, reported Mrs. Anna J. Wood, librarian, who speaks for the city library board when she says that the books and magazines given by (Continued on page six) Hurricane Library (Continued from first page) Mr. Pickett are greatly valued. The Hurricane library was opened July 21, 1934, with a few books that had been collected from the various families in town, offered for circulation. Since that time books donated to the library number 1,438, books purchased, 1,204, making a total of 2,642. The average daily turnover in 1938 was 30 books. Because of a straightened fiancial situation, if it were not for such gifts by Mr. Pickett of magazines, there could be no periodicals loaned at the library, but as it is, many people have the opportunity to enjoy current cur-rent reading material. Mrs. Wood, who has been librarian since the organization began in 1934, has worked for very little, at present she is assisted as-sisted by Miss Milda Isom, Miss Lorna Workman from N.Y.U. and Mrs. Viola Spendlove of WPA. These women have classified the books, bound with cardboarc 1 covers many of the the magazines ! and are constantly mending the much used stock. 1 1 At present the library is hous-! ; ed in a medium sized room be-i tween the post office and the C Sandberg mercantile pending the completion of the new building J on the main square. i |
