Show Brake Neglect Leads to Avoidable Crashes Many of the accidents that fill space in almost every daily paper are blamed on defeciive brakes.. In many cases, the brakes may have been responsible for the mishap, but lack of attention has been the underlying cause of their failure to work or defection at the critical moment. Brakes should be kept in t lie best of condition both sets of them. They should bind tightly when pressure Is applied to them, and be free and clear when the pressure is released. Should the brake band bind when pressure is taken from it, friction is produced and t he car runs with difliculty. Slipping brakes can be traced to worn brake linings, grease on the shoes, or poor adjustment. If the brake lining is worn it should be replaced re-placed at once, as it may fail to hold at the next emergency. Sometimes the lining. If not too much worn, can be put in good shape again by taking up the turn buckle but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and a worn brake lining lin-ing is never to be relied upon. Should there be grease between the brake surfaces it can be washed out with h little gasoline. If the lining Is of leather, neats foot oil or castor oil may be used to advaulage. |
