Show WEST'S DROUTH EXPERTS MEET IN CONFERENCE Aim of Meeting Is to Work Out Means of Relieving Suffering Caused by Long Drouth in Western States Governors and delegates from all of the western states which will be seriously affected by the drought of the past year, met ! at the call of Governor George II. Dcrn in Salt Lake City Monday Mon-day and Tuesday with the aim of formulating a course of action ac-tion to avert distress among western farm-dependent populations popula-tions and to avoid suffering of livestock. Principal problems considered were agriculture, livestock and human suffering in the west, and when the meeting ended, records showed achievements- in all branches, chiefly in the form of recommendations for fill lire action. Highlights of the recommendations recom-mendations were: 1. Reduction of one-half in railroad rates on livestock ;;nd feeds from and to drought counties. coun-ties. 2. Opposing moratoriums as in the end they are harmful to those they intend to help. 0. Local agencies to handle cases of human suffering as far as possible; with appeals to the Red Cross where necessary. 7. Suspension of payment to settlers on such federal reclamation reclama-tion projects as received an inadequate in-adequate water supply in 1931. It was the belief of those present that if the policies outlined out-lined are followed, they will help to alleviate ills which have arisen aris-en or which may arise as a result re-sult of drought, low prices and failing credit. A recommendation recommenda-tion was made that the governor of each state participating in the conference appoint a central committee to organize local units for carrying forward the work planned. Henry T. Atkin, of St. George, representing Washington county, Engineer Woodruff W. Cannon, Benj. Cameron of Panguitch; Senator George Jefferson, Beaver, Bea-ver, and Dr. P. L. Holman of Mt. Pleasant were among those who attended the conference. The latter three representd the As-sociatd As-sociatd Civic Clubs of Southern Utah. |
