Show CREEK WATER cnnni Engineer Recommends Construction Con-struction of Deflectors in Fields; Dam Site Selected Above Shem Reservation A. project aimed at the conservation con-servation of water of the Santa C'.a a creek, and prevention of :';::;her land losses by floods, was outlined last week by rrof. L. M. Wmsor of the 1". S. II. A. to farmers and directors of the three irrigation companies whoso source of supply is the creek. It is also estimated that if the recommended improvement are made, thousands of acres of land, now lying waste on the Ivins bench, can be reclaimed. Two definite projects were recommended rec-ommended by the expert, the first a series of deflectors along the creek channel to save the land. About 20 of the structures will be erected by the St. George Santa Clara irrigation company, and ten by the Santa Clara irrigation irri-gation company. The opinion is expressed that unless the structures struc-tures are put in immediately within a period of ten years all of the valuable land now bordering bor-dering on the creek will have-been have-been washed away. Directors of the two named companies, and of the Santa Clara Bench irrigation company and a group of Indians accompanied accom-panied Prof. Winsor and County Agent Walter F. Smith to a site selected for creation of a reservoir reser-voir by construction of a dam. The recommended location is at. the old smelter at Shorn, a short distance above the Indian school. It is expected that this year a dam only about 15 foot high will be con li.jicted, to be added add-ed to each year until it is to a height to eventually impound: 6000 acre feet of water. If present plans are carried out, no money will bo borrowed from the government for the. project, the entire improvement being made by labor of stockholders stock-holders and others interested and to be benefitted by tho work. The main plan, for this year, at least, is the construction of a reservoir to take off the peak of the floods and store water for futu:c use. |
