Show NEWS NOTES FROM WOODWARD SCHOOL A district school spelling mach is being arranged by the superintendent superin-tendent and teachers of Washington Washing-ton county schools and will be held in St. George on February 22 which will decide the best speller In the county. There will be six representatives Irom each grade in the Woodward Wood-ward school meet on February 5. The six best from the Woodward will meet the six best from the schools at Santa Clara and Washington. Wash-ington. The winners in this district dis-trict will meet the six from each of the other three districts on February 22. . Much interest is being taken in the coming match and contests are beine held in each grade and be tween the different grades each day. The Woodward school basketball team met the team from Mesquite last Friday and a very exciting contest was witnessed. The final score was 14 to 13 in favor of Mesquite. The following is the lineup: Woodward Blake Empey, The-rol The-rol McArthur, Charles Pickett, Boyden Fawcett, Dean Gardner, Evan Whitehead, Bob Brooks and Merlin Milne. Mesquite (Dan Waite, M. Woodbury, Wood-bury, A. Jensen, T. Walte, J. Witt-wer Witt-wer and Bunker. The critic teachers and the Dixie College trainers entertained at a farewell party for B. Glen Smith, head of the Diixe College normal training department, at the Woodward school Monday evening. A very enjoyable time was had and refreshments were served to 25 guests. Miss Emily Harmon, teacher in the first grade, has returned to school after being under quarantine quaran-tine for the past three weeks. A retold story contest was held In Miss Crosby's fourth grade on Wednesday under the direction of Miss Lilith Porter, a trainer. .There were 35 students who told stories and three of these were selected to tell their stories in the other grades. They are Marcelliene Stauffer, Alma Morris and Wilmer Kemp. The faculty was entertained on Wednesday afternoon by Mrs. Rose Graham in her room. All of the members were present to partake of the light luncheon which was served. The occasion was Mrs. Graham's birthday. Superintendent Milton E. Moody and Miss Tillie Winsor will spend today and tomorrow visiting the schools of the county. Mrs. George E. Miles gave a talk to the seventh grades students on education in the early days of Dixie. Mrs. Arthur F. Miles talked on the early amusements in Utah and in Dixie especially. Their talks were very interesting and were enjoyed very much both by the students and the teachers. The girls' baseball team challenged chal-lenged the girls team of Leeds for a game here Friday. The challenge chal-lenge has not yet been accepted. A nipturp of t.hp Wnrri-aje,rri school which had been out of sight in the furnace room for over 20 years . was found recently by Anthony Pendleton, janitor. The picture was taken one year after the Woodward school was erected erect-ed and in it are seen the seventh grade with Charles Miles, instructor. in-structor. The students and teachers teach-ers have enjoyed viewing the old scene and invite all former students stu-dents of the Institution to call and see it. |
