think more of the game I 1 dont don't enjoy homecoming with football There are too many things going on remarked Belcher The last time the Uintah Utes won a homecoming game was in 1974 when they nipped Spanish Fork 87 8 Uintah grabbed a 2 0 lead In the first half when Jim Crofts blocked a kick in the end zone However Spanish Fork garnered a 72 7 lead with a touchdown and an extra point kick in the fourth quarter Uintah pull ed out the homecoming victory when Gary Huber hit Mark Sheffer on a rollout pass for a touchdown In the end zone late in the fourth quarter Time was running out We scored in inthe Inthe the last few minutes of the fourth quarter We got down there but I think we scored the touchdown on one of our last downs I said to my teammates We got to do it it The play was designed as asa asa a rollout pass with an option to pass it or orto orto to go ahead and run stated Gary Huber I rolled right into the flat I remember Mark Sheffer had the inside angle on the defensive back and it was wasa wasa a short pass I dumped it to him and then he caught it turned and fell into the end zone and that was the winning touchdown If the defensive man would have made his hit he would have made it right at the goal line Sheffer turned and dived across the goal line Huber added The team spirit bet everyone seniors juniors and sophomores was good all year long We didn't win a lot of games We won three games that year The game with Spanish Fork was worth while because it had significance It was truly excitement after the game Fathers get pretty geared up when their sons are playing football and an ex ex- ex excited cited father in the 1974 Uintah homecoming ing game was Gary Hubers Huber's dad Doyle Huber I thought Uintah was going to lose until Gary hit Mark for the winning Ute touchdown Uintah was down when Spanish Fork scored its touchdown but late in the fourth quarter we won it with a touchdown from Gary Huber to Mark Sheffer commented Doyle Huber Gary rolled out and Mark went through the line He got behind the linebackers and it was a rollout pass to the right side lie He got him in the end zone for the touchdown An assistant coach for Uintah in the homecoming game over Spanish Fork in 1974 was Steve Malnar of Roosevelt Uintah was just up for the game and the athletes were high that night I felt our defense played super ball Crofts block block- blocked ed a punt It went out of the end zone for fora fora a safety in the first half and I knew we would have a good defensive game TherE was a lot of punting in the game stated Malnar When asked to comment on the Utes winning touchdown Malnar remarked We had confidence in the second half There were four minutes left when we our winning touchdown I was up in the tower and head coach Phil Johnson sent the play from the sidelines Gary Huber had the option to keep the ball and run or throw it if the guy was open He just lobbed it and Mark Sheffer caught it and went in for the touchdown Malnar added Huber was 20 to 25 yards from the end zone when he threw the ball Sheffer was behind the defender We felt pretty good and that was the year that Uintah beat Union It was the first time lime had beaten Union in many years Uintah beat Union 1612 16 Wc r rt rS rD t p a S t D 4 r LI t tI IoN I THE UTES Pat Jenkins motors down the field with the football in his hand and hopes that
