Vernal through a government sponsored pro pro- program gram known as the Pacific International Exchange PIE III I love this place said Miyako One month I was very scared about everything but now I 1 make many friends They teach me everything Miyako came to Vernal Aug 20 She will willbe willbe be living here for a year before return return- returning ing to Japan Everyone very kind and friendly replied Miyako when asked how she likes the people here Both Miyako and Ileana are students at Uintah High School Miyako is a member of the Uintah High varsity volleyball team Ileana is active in social dance and gymnastics She is also a member of the pep club III I really like it here Ileana respond ed when asked how she likes being in inVernal inVernal Vernal III I like the school I like the cute boys There are two programs set up on the Pacific International Exchange system They have a six month program and a year program Why I like this program more than any other is because they the the families here dont don't totally support a child while they are in their home said Linda Carnegie Vernal representative d For any family interested in having a foreign exchange student live with them they can contact Mrs Carnegie She will set up an appointment and come out to their home to interview the family This 1 is the only can find out if they are area area a stable family Qualifications for having an exchange student in your home are a stable home life and to make sure good living condi condi- condi conditions exist The family are to provide room and board and emotional support The family of the student sends the stu dent money monthly from their homeland for their expenses Mrs Carnegie said they get tion and get sketches of and about the Students If we feel the family would be good to haveA ud nt tn choose their student The students in Vernal have an opportunity opportunity to become an exchange student said Mrs Carnegie There are representatives in every country They interview the student and sign them up for the program They make sure they will be able to adjust In all of the countries except Japan the student is required to know another language In Japan there isn't this requirement It is a good opportunity for the students In the United States They are able to relate to different cultures It gives them a cultural exchange said Linda Vernal has accepted these kids At this time they are in need of of a family ly to place Ileana Those interested in having her as part of their family can contact Linda at after 5 pm There will also be two openings on the six month program in January These students are placed in the high schools There can be four exchange students in each high school but only two can be from the same country at a time This is kind of a year away from school for most of the students said Linda If they want to have their credits count they can If they dont don't they arent aren't required to do so When the students come there is a cultural shock for about the first month said Mrs Carnegie It takes them a lit tie tle while to adjust The students and the families they are coming to live with interact before they come to the United States through letters and phone calls By the time they come corne they arent aren't strangers Bill Caldwell principal of Uintah High School said they have the best learning available to them by coming and living here They are able to get it first hand Our students get a real boost by be- be being being ing able to understand people from other countries and cultures said Mr Caldwell Mr Caldwell said the exchange students are usually well prepared academically so it makes it a good experience Miyako lives with the She said they are a very kind family They treat me as if I 1 am their daughter I think I am very lucky here In talking to some of the students they said it is very interesting to have them here Mrs Carnegie was a representative in Missiouri also She said she opened up that area for this program I have opened up this area within a mile radius said Mrs Carnegie referring to the area within and around Vernal Thes i been she said in response to the schools school's ac ac- ac acceptance of this program In placing a student Mrs Carnegie said they are willing to go as far as Rangely and Rock Hock Springs to place these students Not only is this program an opportunity ty for other students to come to the United States but it gives those in the United States a chance to go to other countries There are also two more exchange students in
