Show t I ft Ali 3 g gI I I NL R f N K 4 a r 1 g I. to toL twI tw 01 L iId I CENTRA STUDENTS are engrossed In their new reading program Instituted this year The students student are tested and pla placed ed In n one of three programs designed for their theft particular needs Uintah schools have new IGE program By fly Lorin Il n. n HTaylor Taylor Principal All of the elementary schools in Uintah School District this year have a new reading adoption This is the Basic Reading Series that is published by the Mifflin Houghton-Mifflin Company We also have a new Laidlaw Brothers adoption in language arts for third through sixth gra grades es TO HELP us at Central School and also at Maeser with our our reading we we are using what is known as the Individually Guid Guided d Education Program aGE IGE This is a way to manage our available education resources to approach each child individually and still provide an education for all IGE is a way to teach children one one- oneat at t a time together At Central School this is particularly par par- the case with reading and it means a child can progress as fast as he is ab able e in inthe inthe inthe the areas easiest for him and still take the time he needs in areas he finds more difficult The IGE Learning Cycle as itis itis it itis is called starts with the thed d definition of what is to be learned Once the objectives have haye been determined a a achild child Is tested to see whether he has already attained the objective or r if he e needs to undertake a program which will permit him to learn it If he knows it he then goes on to another objective objective ob ob- However if he needs to learn it h he is provided with one of of many y varied ried learning activities activities activities ac ac- which have been designed specifically for that objective After he has completed the learning activities he is retested retested retested re- re tested to see if he has learned the objective as it was set out ir initially This cycle is repeated over over and over again as each new objective is uI undertaken by students Students know from the beginning what they are expected to learn In addition they have an opportunity to help make the decision as as to how they will learn and they know when the they h have ve learned the objective OUR SCHOOL is divided into two units One is composed of the first second and third grades and the other is composed composed com com- posed of the fourth fifth and sixth grades In each unit are six teachers and one teaching aide along with a clerical aide who works with both loth units Children also learn in different different different dif dif- ferent types of groups For instance a student may spend part of the time in different groups where he has a great deal of opportunity to discuss explore and participate on a take give basis The small group ensures that he will have havethe havethe havethe the opportunity to talk and be heard as well as to listen and respond to all kinds of situa situations that come up duri during g that segment of the school day In addition to the small group activities every child has the opportunity to participate in independent study During this time he pursues things that are of interest at the moment He lie will complete challenging assignments that have been designed specifically for his or her personal needs Or the student may pursue the answer to a question that has been designed to permit the student to learn how to learn Another learning mode is th the one to pattern This means that one student would be paired with another student or with wilh an an i aide or teacher In addition children learn in the usual or known best mode mode mode- th the large group We at Central School are very enthused and happy about this new program and we are certain it will be a means of improving our scholastic offering offering offering of of- fering all the way b Girl originally meant a child of either sex |
