Walsh was assisting Mrs Bugbee to secure a divorce from her husband and nd it is rumored that it was his intention in that event to marry her She has been w working king for some time for the family of Harry Goff who lives 15 miles below Rangely Colorado He made one trip over to Goffs Goff's ranch during the early spring and on his return missed the road and wandered around till after dark when finally he saw a camp and supposing it to be an Indian camp dared not go to it The next morning he found it to be James Hacking lacking and a party who were out on a trip to the asphaltum deposits Because of the fact that he had been over the road twice noone no noon noone no on one ever suspected ted that tha t he would d have any difficulty in finding the place when he started from town a week ago last Saturday morning for Goffs Goff's ranch His outfit was a mule and cart belonging to toJos J Jos Josephj s Telson 7 He was was not ot f e tl j toA 5 to to travel to in the hills lis As an evidence of this he did not feed the mule muJe the the night before starling starting because he said it had been eating all day Friday He had been told that there was a cutoff road which he could take After his departure no thought was taken regarding him until last Saturday eight days after his departure when Lycurgus Johnson learned that tha t he had not been heard of in Rangely TINS TillS ALARMED Mr Johnson and he at once got up a search party composed of Clarence Johnson Rock M. M Pope Eli EJi Lee Will Sprouse Ren Hatch and John Workman wro who drove a team with feed and water for the party They left V Vernal inal at 10 o'clock Saturday night went as far as Jensen and camped The next morning ticy f followed Mr Walsh's tracks which in all its windings made a distance pf 90 miles They found that he left the main road as soon as he crossed the river and traveled down the river for 12 miles when he met someone who told him that he was wrong He returned to the road and instead of taking the main road to White River he traveled nearl nearly to th the K Ranch then turned to the right and traveled through the sage brush rush several miles to the White River road This he followed to the old H Rawlins and Ouray road which het he Jf followed olio wed several miles but concluded that he was wrong ret returned on it the White River road and again followed it to the Asphaltum road This he followed some distance then cut across the country to the White River Road again Besides these rambles he made one long tour to the west for five miles mUes and returned to the road Finally he followed an old road leading t to the White River at a point Jower down the stream coming onto a ledge and camped This was the second night out The indications are that he tethered his mule with the lines and the animal suffering from hunger and thirst broke lose and went to Green River near Ouray The next morning Walsh rolled the ha harness into his blankets and started out on foot lie He would go down in the gulches until he came to box canyons then he would turn up into the hills again Finally he M wan wan- wandered wandered dered in a circle and last of all his course became simply an aimless zig lag zag They saw where he had rested and where he had p passed two different 4 nights after leaving his cart The second night he had withered in convulsions and his sufferings must have been intense j I TOWARD NIGHT Sprouse Johnson and Hatch returned to the wagon while Pope and Lee went to Goffs Goff's f s and spent Sunday night Early arly Monday morning the wagon started back to Green River After a time Johnson and Sprouse were compelled because of thirst to follow It Lee and Pope took the trail of Walsh again and anti found him in a few hours His lIis largest circle was about six miles in extent The searchers searchers searchers sear sear- chers had been within yards of him Sunday night He first took off of his collar then he began throwing away his books and letters One book a novel was torn up and placed under a bush In his rambles he had twice been within a mile of White River liver and once in plain sight of water but he must have been too delirious to recognize it His Ilis body when found was not nt badly decomposed he appeared quite natural and the only injury that he had was that one of his eyeballs had been forced from the socket and was hanging on his cheek The point where the body lay was about six miles from Gaffs Goff s ranch When Pope and Lee caught the others of the party they were so near Jensen that they thought it best to get a justice of the peace to go with them for forthe forthe forthe the body and as Justice Billings of Jensen was away from home they came to Vernal Monday night Early Tuesday morning a party headed by Rock M. M Pope and Justice Davids started out outto outto outto to hold an inquest and to get the body They took a coffin with them The search party found him on the he tenth day Their opinion on is that he liv seven or eight days after leaving Vernal Very little is known of his past history He lie in Wales His father died while he was still an infant The mother married again again and the step step- father proved to be a drunkard and a brute and drove young Walsh away from Crom home while still a mere lad He lie came to io America at the Insistence of an uncle living at Delta Colorado whose name is Tom Thomas He lie was a saloon keeper Walsh not taking kindly to that business began working for an education lie He worked and attended attended attended at at- tended school at al intervals until he became proficient as an attorney at law He lie practiced law to some extent at Delta and about two years ago moved to Vernal where he has been well known as Judge Walsh a title he gained through temporary appointment given him after Judge Dusenberry had resigned Walsh presided over a term of the district court in Vernal His subsequent history is well known as he had quite a law practice built up He lie was bright and generous hearted as well as as very out spoken The whole community is moved with sorrow for his sufferings and his untimely death LATER Justice Davids Rock M M. Pope Harmon Knoble and Walt Wait Decker the party which left Tuesday morning to get the body of Attorney J. J P P. P Walsh returned Wednesday night Justice Davids considered considered considered con con- an inquest unnecessary as the evidences were abundant that the unfortunate man died of hungar and thirst and no violence had been done him The body was so badly decomposed that no attempt was made to bring it in It was placed in the coffin and buried near where he died The grave was marked with head and foot footboards footboards footboards boards and two rude stone monuments were built up by it so that it can be found for years to come The searchers all donated their time and expense of the search was raised by public subscription L. L Johnson and sons giving considerable of the amount Rock M. M Pope says that the trip was the hardest one that he was ever on on |
