Show Grizzly Ri Ridge Lodge Must Go The Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce Com merce coerce directors agreed to ask the US U.S. Forest Service for II an extension for the removal of the facilities and improve ments at Grizzly Ridge ski area for at least nine months THE DEADLINE for removal of all aU improvement properties belonging to the LaRell Anderson family was Monday At Ata a special Chamber of Commerce Indus trial Development Committee meeting Wednesday of last week the extension proposal was made and a phone caU calland and anda a letter written to the Regional Forester Vern Hamre asking for more time to remove the Grizzly Ridge JUdge improvements At the Industrial Development meeting called by chairman Glenn U. U Cooper re re- of the Ashley Forest Kent Taylor and Vaughn Frances and Court Anderson partner in the Grizzly Ridge JUdge Corp presented a brief history of the struggle of the ski area MR FRANCES explained that in 1959 a term able permit was first fint issued to LaRell Anderson for his ski resort In Tn 1967 1007 a year 20 term permit was issued to Grizzly Ridge Corporation Then in 1967 a safety problem developed with the tow During the season of 69 the ski tow did not operate and a feas feasibility study was started to see what could be done The Forest orest Service term permit states that the operator must operate 90 days das each year This has not been done since 1968 so the Ashley Forest asked to have havethe havethe havethe the permit cancelled The deadline for lor cancellation was in June of 1970 Then May 31 1971 was set as the final date of termination Mr Frances stated A DAY 0 extension was sought to further fur lur ther then work out a solution to continue the ski resort or find someone interest interested ed in investing in rebuilding the ski area to the safety requirements of the Forest orest Service On July 31 1971 the Regional Forester orester terminated the permit as of May 31 31 1971 1911 NOVEMBER 15 5 1971 1911 was set as the tho deadline to remove everything from the ther r f premises including the lift and lodge It Itis Itis Itis is th the policy of the Forest Service that if the improvements are arc not removed by the specified time they will wilt go in inand inand inand and either remove remo the items themselves or hire it done and charge the cost cwt to the permit holder explained Mr Frances MR ANDERSON explained he was in inthe inthe inthe the process of writing the Regional Forest For est office asking for lor an extension of time for the removal of his improvements Be De cause of the recent snow storms normal access to the area has been prevented The extension was asked until summer when normal access could be had into the area and by them maybe mayba someone could be found who could make use of the existing facilities explained Mr Anderson A set of proposed plans were shown by Mr Taylor and Mr Frances including a larger expanded Grizzly Ridge area that could be developed and rebuilt into a winter sports area The rhe new area would ba have va a foot 1300 eleva elevation on drop with ski trails over two miles long song Instead in instead instead stead of f the present foot tOO drop for only one halt mile The development would require about a 1 million invest ment meat The Forest Service will wilt advertise the new plans in ski magazines and contact prospective developers to see if it someone would be interested in developing the new expanded area A paved road could be constructed into the area by the Forest Forest Forest For For- est Service if the right arrangements were made said the Forest Summer recreation in the area would woul l continue to be limited because of the difficulty of developing both winter whiter and summer recreation facilities in the same area explained the Forest tines tives AS OF Tuesday neither the Cham Chamber r of Commerce nor the local Forest office had re received word from the Ogden r re regional regional gional office concerning the Ute re request for tot the removal extension |
