Show Local Students Rate High in Math Contest In March 16 students student from Uintah High School and two students from Vernal Vernal Ver Ver- nal Junior High School were among Utah high school students who participated participated in the state math contest held at Weber State College The contest consisted of a test containing containing con con- 50 problems drawn from all subjects subjects sub sub- taught in high school mathematics ics throughout the state of Utah from first first- year first ear algebra to calculus Students were allowed three hours to complete the test I IN N CLASS division of the state level Uintah earned three of the 40 scores awarded to seniors juniors sophomores and freshmen Out of the ten awards to freshmen Stephen Jolley received seventh place Doak Chew placed third and Marc Mare Mansfield ninth out of the theten theten theten ten awards given to sophomores These three boys were the only students students stu stu- dents in the entire contest from a Class B or Class A school to win a place in the statewide categories OF CONTESTANTS representing the 14 schools in Region Six competition five of the ten places given were awarded award award- ed to Uintah High School students Doak Chew second Marc Mansfield third Kelby Davis fifth Connie ONeil O'Neil sixth and Randy Ross ninth The test was considered by instructors instructors tors accompanying ing the students to be bethe bethe bethe the most difficult test ever given at atthe atthe atthe the state level OF INTEREST Is the fact that results results re reo re- re of the 1909 1969 ACT test given for college college college col col- lege entrance showed that students from Uintah High School placed well above the national average in mathematics |
