Show Sports Mere and There by Al Ablett Now its the college presidents that are running the Skyline conference. con-ference. That is one of the big mysteries to me. They pay a coach almost as much as they do the president then they hire an athletic director at almost the same salary and these two men are supposed to have charge of the athletic department but do they, I should say not. The last work is held by the presidents and most of these men while they are very learned men in their fields they know practically practic-ally nothing about athletics. So what happens in the Skyline conference, con-ference, the coaches and athletic directors give Commissioner Dick Romney a unanimous vote of con fidence then the presidents meet and they vote 4 to 4. Now it takes tak-es four votes to oust the commissioner com-missioner and he had to get at least a 6 to 2 vote to be retained. From all reports this Romney can't do, so he will be through as of July 1955. Some say it is politics but to my way of thinking think-ing it is nothing more than a good way to break up the conference con-ference in order that certain members who have ideas of going go-ing big time to do just that. Because as far as doing a job no one can find fault with Romney. Rom-ney. He took this conference when it was strictly bush and made it into a group that is recognized rec-ognized nationwide. Just last year he picked the plum of the nationally televised football games when he got the Utah-BYU Utah-BYU game on Thanksgiving day. That was Dick Romney and no one else. He has a promise of even ev-en bigger things this fall. These things he did when this conference confer-ence needed publicity bad, because be-cause up to the time he took office of-fice these western states as far as football was concerned were just a place where the streamliners stream-liners stopped for orders. So the presidents meet and it looks like Dick has to go and of course this will break up the canferenee as we know it today. This in itself may be a good thing because if we in the Rocky Mountains are to see big time football and basketball, one of our schools has to go independent independ-ent or join a bigger conference. Utah has already scheduled the Army for 1957 and with the new air academy going in at Colorado Springs we are sure to see bigger big-ger things in college sports. All of this is for the better as far as I am concerned, the thing I'm against is that a man of Dick Romney's character and ability is to be made the goat. Why don't the presidents that are big time minded just come right out and say we think that we are being held down so we are pulling out. I don't think that anyone would hold that against them and it would leave a better feeling all the way around. Baseball is having a great year and all because of the great race going on in both of the big leagues. lea-gues. It has everyone talking a-bout a-bout the game and when you have that you have people going out to see the game. Salt Lake has fallen upon evil days. They have a spurt at home then go into in-to a tailspin on the road. If they are to win consistently they will have to get help in the pitching department and a third baseman that can hit. Ogden and Magic Valley are the two most improved improv-ed teams in the league and from now on just watch these two clubs move up. The local Miners lost to Layton Wednesday night 11 to 7 and to Doc Johnson of the Amateurs Monday 10 to 6. The only thing that stops this team from winning win-ning in a walk is pitching. Bab-cock Bab-cock needs one good pitcher, one that can go in there and stop 'em. With that his club would be a honey. They have a bunch of youngsters that are hustlers and they will make runs. It is just a question of holding the other fellow. Terry Moore, the once great Cardinal outfielder and now a scout for the Phillies, is holding a baseball school in Salt Lake this week. The day I was in they had a good turnout but the material ma-terial wasn't anything to write home about. It seems that the boys that are prospects just didn't did-n't show up. But Terry was in good humor and he gave those in attendance some fine pointers that they can take home with them and pass on to the kids in their communities and help them to be better ball players. It seems that Utah at long last is getting some attention from the big leagues lea-gues and this I am sure will in a very few years show results. See you next week. AL |
