Show JackStraws Jack tach- J cla- cla Str Straws s By Jack Wallis Never have we seen more determination determination and enthusiasm by so many persons persons per per- sons as we saw Saturday in the 20 mile Walk Walk-a Walk a Thon It was astonishing to see how much fun was generated out of s suffering through a 20 mile walk for fora a good cause The two extremes in the contest were were proved by two school teachers Coach Leon covered the Walk Walk-A Walk Walk-A-Thon Thon route in just a little over three hours in a determined speed demonstration and Aron Thedell proved he had the to stick to for his many sponsors sponsors sponsors spon spon- sors by finishing in ten hours Most of the walkers came through in about six sixto sixto sixto to eight hours When people will voluntarily walk 20 miles for a cause its it's got to be good and there has to be some real organization behind it We congratulate all those who worked so hard to make the Walk A such sucha a success It was a great tribute to our community and everyone we have talked to felt very proud of the l tact fact t that they really got out a and d did some something sonie- sonie thing to help prevent birth defects and handicapped children We are either getting soft in our old age or just more sentimental but the impact of the film presentations presentation shown by the many fund drives sure carry arry a wh llop The films are starred by television and movie stars very professionally professionally professionally pro pro- produced and loaded with emotion After watching the March of Dimes show on birth defects with nearly all aU allmen allmen men nten at the Chamber meeting we were all aU touched to see the star of the show demonstrate how he had overcome his handi handicap iap of being born without arms Yoi Yo struggled with him for the effort b was making and then to see him swim just like a fish was truly remark- remark able The film on the Walk Thon made you want to get out and start walking to the catchy song they were singing Then this week we saw a film presentation presentation pre pre- presentation on cancer and it almost made madeus us sure we had cancer if we didn't have a regular yearly check The only problem here is how do you have an annual checkup checK when you feel you are imposing on the overworked doctors doctors doctors doc doc- tors in our area If everyone would go goin goin goin in for a up check-up like the cancer film suggests I dont don't know what the local doctors would do Im I'm sure some of the older residents of the area are smiling at the Lake Powell controversy over the level of the lake and its encroachments into the Rainbow Rainbow Rainbow Rain Rain- bow Bridge National Monument The nature groups groups groups' are determined to stop the water and Federal Judge Ritter has decreed that they are right according to the agreements made in the upper Colorado River compacts Now if we remember right this whole thing was started when we wanted to build Echo Eclo Park dam on the Green RIver River Ri ver which would back water In the Dinosaur Dinosaur Dinosaur Din Din- National Monument partially covering cov ering Steamboat Rock A great fuss was made at this time and finally this clause which now is said to be a mistake was incorporated into the river agreement that states no reclamation project should back water into a National Park or Monument Echo Park Dam am became a dirty word and everyone went along their merry way denying the area of a valuable reclamation dam project But now the worm has turned Over three million dollars will be down the drain annually if the power head of Glen Canyon Dam is not utilized to its maximum which will back water into Rainbow Bridge Monument So now the hassle is on nature lovers vs so-called so progress This is not only true rue with water but it is also going on with timber resources roads oil and gas pipelines electric power generation gen and even driving the family car Where is the line who is right and where will it all lead us Right ight now it Jt appears well we'll all aU be headed beaded for the Continued on page 8 Jack Straws Continued from page 1 poor house if the environmentalists demands demands de mands keep coming A line will have to be drawn some day but where willit will willit it ft be It is very discouraging to see sec negotiations like this start because each opposing opposing opposing op op- op- op posing side starts at such extreme ends of the bargaining table Somewhere inthe in inthe inthe the middle we must settle on on what we think our future problems will be and try to do the best for all mankind at atthe atthe atthe the present time as well as as for generations generations gen gen- to come Therein lies the problem no one knows what is best for everyone even at the present time let lt alone in in rI the distant future So we do the thing we know best and that seems to be to take sides and knock each other with the hopes that the best solution for using using us us- ing our our natural resources and also keeping keeping keep keep- ing them will somehow evolve through a compromise of some kind |
