With their okay, the students and Mrs. Karen went to work. Tryouts were held for the talent show. According to Mrs. Karen, at least 100 people tried out. Due to the length of the show, they were only able to have a portion por-tion of that number for this talent show. Tryouts helped to determine who would participate. Each contestant prepared a number which they performed for Mrs. Karen. From there students and numbers were selected for the show. Practices and more practices then began which was about two months ago, according to Mrs. Karen. ' i "LONG TALL TEXAN" found four 'Long Tall Texans' boys singing sing-ing with three girls as back ups telling everyone what being a Many fcalerrts displayed av si::vh grade show Whether it be dancing to the beat of "Mickey", singing "Up Where We Wong", playing a flute duet, telling and acting out the story of the "Bears in Bed", or being "Long Tall Texas(s)", the sixth grade at the Vernal Junior High School displayed what; they could do Thursday night, April 14 with their first alent show-.:The talent show was for the parents and the community of Vernal. "The kids wanted to do something," said Joyce Karen, one of the sixth grade music teachers at the junior high. They came to her asking her if she would help ftem get a program going so they could show some of the things they could do. "They really got into music this year," said Mrs. Karen. "They decided they wanted a program." The idea of having a talent show first the microphones and lights to help familiarize them with what it would be like the night of the performance. "Fro,m the very beginning they have progressed a lot," said Mrs. Karen. Mrs. Karen said the students would get up on stage and say they couldn't do it and then would do a really good job. "The students are excited about doing it. They enjoy being on the stage with the microphones," Mrs. Karen said. Tuesday afternoon, April 19 the students will perform for their classsmates and show them their program. "A lot of the kids said they hoped they get to do it next year," said Mrs. Karen. Various forms of talent were perform; ed thoughout the evening. Several dances such as "Abracadabra", "That's Good", "Heart Attack", and "Great Unknown", to name a few, were performed for the audience's enjoyment. Clarinet, cello, flute, and piano pieces were also treats for the audience to relax 'long tall Texan' means. "How the world looks to an ant" was told by a student looking like a large ant which gave the audience a new perspective perspec-tive on the world around them.
