"We are here because we have juestions which have not been inswered." 'Ck' Doug Lawson questioned the use of the present high school as a junior high. Lawson feels the facility will be wasted is a junior high school. The gymnasium s larger than most high schools in the (EC!ss,iitate' almst as large as a college gym-lwasium, gym-lwasium, Lawson said. According to awson, the vocational buildings which iave been built behind the high school vill be wasted, since junior high students lo not have the same needs high school itudents do. Lawson also questioned the -ilevelopment of oil shale. He cited the fjCraig situation as a comparison of a t .om community, which returned to its ,!rior state shortly after the boom. I-ipecause of this, Lawson questioned the INK? to build a new high school for a tem-)iWrary tem-)iWrary influx of students. y'l Another issue addressed at the jlieeting was the possibility of building lwie school on a pay as you go basis. If this done, someone suggested there jpf Could be a savings of nearly $28 million, r pis figure was arrived at as a matter j'f the interest saved. C . 1 Tom SnvHorcoi,! could be built each year simply for the interest which will be paid on the $17 million bond. Snyder raised a question about a year-round year-round school possibility and the recent trip sponsored by the School Board to Jefferson County, Colo., to see an actual school district involved in year-round schools. Snyder said the School Board reported the trip cost $4,845.58. Snyder questioned the validity of this figure, since many of the people who went were school district employees. Snyder thinks it is only fair their salaries be included in the total cost. Snyder also said each of the 39 people were given $25 cash as they boarded the bus. Snyder said he was told, when he asked what the $25 was for, it was in case anyone got lost. They would then be able to call a cab. Putting everything together Snyder said the real figure for the trip to Colorado was more like $20,000. Sheila Lind addressed the group as an advocate of the bond. Mrs. Lind was among those who visited Jefferson County, Coun-ty, Colo. She thinks year-round schools are not the best answer to our community communi-ty problem. She said that agriculture and gardening is very important to our community, com-munity, and the experience this offers students in the summer months is invaluable. She said the double session has not been extremely detrimental to her own family, it has caused family disruption in most cases. Mrs. Lind also voiced her displeasure at the early and late hours required by double sessions. Joe Haslem voiced his desire that the superintendant of the school district be an elected official, rather than appointed. The possibility of building on to the present high school was discussed. The school board has said this is not a realistic possibility, since the core facility facili-ty was built for 500 students. This was questioned by several of those at the meeting. Not only was the facility capacity questioned, it was also suggested sug-gested that even if the figure was correct, cor-rect, an addition could still solve the problem. An unnamed person suggested that if a substantial building was built near the present building, including locker space and adequate classrooms, and a few more minutes were added between classes. This would cut down the number of students in any one spot at any one time, thus releaving pressure on the core building and alleviating congestion. |
