Show Vernal nets third place The Vernal Junior High Panthers toppled Roaring Fork, 55 to 51, Saturday in the Craig Frosh Tournament. The Panthers downed Steamboat Springs, 56 to 23, Friday and dropped an 81-50 game to Rifle, Saturday. Vernal netted a 21-9 lead in the first quarter and owned a 36-21 after two , quarters. The Panthers grabbed a 46-38 advantage in the third quarter and won : the game by four points. Mark Powell led the Panthers with 36 points. He pumped in 14 field goals and hit 8 out of 13 free throws. Powell scored 16 points in the first quarter on seven field goals and two free throws. He pumped in 11 points in the second quarter on three field goals and five free throws and scored six points in the third quarter on three field goals. Powell scored two points in the fourth quarter on one field goal. Also scoring points for Vernal were: Todd Mulville, 6; Brett Durrant, 4; Valton Mortenson, 3; Larry Bartlett, 2; Jody Williams, 2 and Schultz, 1. The Panthers erupted in the first quarter for a 15-4 lead in the game with Steamboat Springs and owned a 19-8 lead after two quarters. The Vernal team had a lead of 36-12 at the end of the third quarter and exploded for 20 points in the fourth quarter for a 56-23 win. Bartlett led the Vernal team in scoring scor-ing at 11 points. Also scoring for Vernal were Williams, 8; Mulville, 8; Morten-son, Morten-son, 6; Powell, 5; Shultz, 5; Brant Ruesink, 3; Cory Laing, 3; Todd White, 2 and Darin Merrell, 2. Rifle grabbed a 22 to 14 lead in the first quarter, but Vernal tied up the game at 33-33 in the second quarter. However, Rifle Ri-fle shot into the lead in the third quarter at 55-47 and bombed Vernal, 26 to 3, in the fourth quarter for an 81-50 win. Powell was the top Vernal point gainer at 22 points. Also scoring for Vernal were: White, 12; David Murphy, 5; Williams, 4; Mortenson, 4 and Durrant, 1. Gordon was the top Rifle shooter at 24 points. |
