However, Smiley's scored seven runs in the top of the fifth inning and won the game by the score of 9 to 6. The catcher by the name of Fern Reynolds received a lot of action at the home plate. She was on the receiving end of a toss from Teresa Smith for a doubleplay in the game and turned in another interesting play in the game as she nabbed the Softball, turned around and tagged the base runner. However, the ball dropped out of her glove for a safe call. Nancy Harrison of Smiley's advanced to first base because she figured that she had been walked in a game with Uintah County Sheriff team, but umpire, Howard Gilbert said, "Come back here. It's a full count." Harrison thought she had been walked, but Gilbert told her that she had not been listening to him. Harrison flied out on the next pitch for the third out and Tammy Killian was stranded at third base. Umpiring is a thankless job as the ball, strike, out and safe caller is alwavs wrong in someone's eves. The faas and players shout, "That pitch was too low for a strike or how could you call that a ball it was right in there for a strike. You missed that one ump." Umpire, Gilbert was just trying to worrv about strike, ball, out or safe calls, but then he encountered something he wasn't expecting and that was an interference call. Melanie Bradford was heading toward sprond base and the infielder got in her way. Bradford was moved to third base and Teresa Smith was placed on second base. However, Gilbert discussed the matter with Jay Gates and Gilbert decided to move Smith to first base and Bradford to third base because Smith wasn't involved in the action at second base. Smith said, "Why don't you have him (Gates) umpire the game?" Gilbert's answer was a smile and he probably wouldn't have minded if a new umpire entered the game, but the umpire doesn't get a replacement unless he breaks his legs or suffers other injuries. Gilbert was still standing so he remained in the game. When an umpire makes the call that is right for one team because it helps the crew he is a hero, but when the ""II is the wrong one for a team because it hurts the crew he is a bum. So the umpire just tries to call them like he sees them and if the players question his eye sight about a certain call he just tries to keep his cool and continue to do his job.
