Stillwater tunneling starts up Construction has resumed on the Stillwater Tunnel after several months of suspension, according to Bureau of Reclamation construction engineers at Duchesne. A new contract was awarded in February to Traylor Bros. Evansville. Ind.. and Fruin-Colon Contracting Co.. St. Louis. Ml., as a joint venture, for $34,541,600. A spokesman for the contractor says workmen were moved in to the job the first part of April, and are remining 6.000 feet of the excavated inlet portal. The contractor's spokesman said the plan is to excavate the circular tunnel from both ends, using two tunnel boring machines (Moles). Workmen are disassembling one mole stuck in the tunnel about 6.000 feet from the outlet portal in the North Fork of the Duchesne River. This mole will be modified to continue the boring to meet another mole to be guided "on the laser beam" from the Rock Creek Canyon inlet portal. |
