Former Vernal resident dies Former Vernal resident, Jennie Burton Bur-ton Powell, died at her Arcadia, Calif., home on Oct. 27, 1980 following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Powell was a member of the pioneering Burton family, well remembered as early developers of Vernal. Her step-father, J.K. Bullock, was also a strong force in developing the Uintah Basin. Jennie Burton Powell was born at her family's ranch on the banks of the Green River near Jensen. After the death of her father, Jennie moved to Vernal, where she was raised by her aunt and uncle, Ann and Ike Burton. Following graduation from Wasatch Academy, Jennie returned to Vernal to teach in the Wilcox Academy for 10 years. In 1920, she married Forrest Asa Powell of Phoenix, Ariz., and they moved mov-ed to Beverly Hills, Calif., where they made their home for many years. In the mid-1930's, Mrs. Powell returned return-ed to Vernal and lived here for several years. Both of her children attended local schools. Mrs. Powell would have been 88 Nov. 5. She is survived by her two children. Curton Powell of Arcadia, Calif.; and Virginia McGuckin of Oceanside, Calif.; four grandchildren, a half-brother, half-brother, Dr. Weldon K. Bullock. San Marino, Calif,; and a half-sister, Martha Mar-tha Karren Crouse, Reno, Nev. |
