Show Hunters to begin elk blasting, Wednesday, Oct. 3 Hunters will begin blasting elk, Wednesday, October 3 in Utah and the shooting action will last until October 16. The hunt is mainly open bull, but there are some special permits in some areas. The shooting begins a half hour before sunrise and ends a half hour after sunset each day. The main areas for open bull elk hunting are Ashley-Daggett, Ashley-Vernal, Ashley-Vernal, Ashley-Whiterocks and Heber Red Creek. According to Division of Wildlife field personnel the elk hunt should be similar to last year. It should be a pretty good hunt and the hunter pressure might be up slightly depending depen-ding on the weather. "Hunters should tell their people at home exactly where they are going to camp. We have a small moose population and we ask people to watch what they shoot. Each year we lose about 8 or 10 moose during elk hunt in this region. One year we lost seventeen. The moose hunt isn't open to the elk hunters. Proclamations are available at regional offices and hunters should be sure of Utah laws. If hunters have any questions they can call our office at 789-3103," stated Bob Nielson, game manager. The elk population according to Division of Wildlife field personnel is as good as last year and maybe even a little better, but the deer population doesn't look good. There was a heavy deer winter loss, and the Division officers of-ficers anticipate the deer hunt will be slow in the Northeastern Region. The deer hunt will begin on October 20 and will last until October 30. The general season for hunting of ducks, whistling swan (to holders of special permits only), Wilson's snipe and coot opens on October 6 and closes on January 6. The general season for the hunting of geese opens on October 13 and lasts until December 23. However, in Daggett County geese may be taken only during the period of November 3 and December 9.
