VernciB voBleyboBI veatv. collects vers-.- place vivle Vernal Junior High's varsity volleyball team captured first place in the Uintah Basin League with a record of 7 wins and 1 loss. The Panthers dropped their season opener to Roosevelt and then won seven in a row for the title. "We learned a lot from the loss to Roosevelt. The kids practiced twice as hard to be winners. The young ladies are winners both on and off the floor. They have real good team spirit and they are ladies both on and off the floor," stated Vernal volleyball coach, Ixuiise Murch. Vernal's varsity team was downed by Roosevelt on the first game on October 4, 15 to 10, in Roosevelt. The Panthers rallied to win the match as they downed the Rough Riders, 15 to 13 in the second game and 17 to 15 in the third game. Scoring points for Vernal in the first game were: Mauri Green,. 3; Julene Johnson, 2; Janette Wiseman, 2; Michelle Green, 1; Deah Bennion, 1 and Michelle Blaisure, 1. Joan Hacking scored six points in the second game for Vernal and Janette Wiseman flipped in five counters. Also scoring service points were: Michelle Blaisure, 2; Julene Johnson, 1 and Michelle Green, 1. Firing in points for Vernal in the . second game were: Michelle Blaisure, 5; Deah Bennion, 4; Michelle Green, 3; Joan Hacking, 3 and Mauri Green, 2. The Vernal varsity team encountered the Duchesne Eagles on the road, October 9 and the Panthers won the first game, 15 to 4 and the third game, 15 to 8. Duchesne won the second game, 15 to 12. The top scorer in the first game for Vernal was Julene Johnson with seven service points. Also scoring for Vernal were: Chris Blaisure, 4; Joan Hacking, 2; Deah Bennion, 1 and Michelle Blaisure, 1. Joan Hacking fired in nine points in the second game and Deah Bennion scored two counters. Julene Johnson ' tossed in one service point. Julene Johnson was the high scorer for Vernal in the second game with eight points. Also scoring points were: Janette Wiseman, 5; Michelle Blaisure, 1 and Joan Hacking, 1. Vernal garnered its seventh win in a row when they toppled the West Vikings in Vernal on October 10. The Panthers downed the Vikings in the first game, 15 to 6 and West won the second game, 16 to 14. Vernal won the contest by default when West forfeited the third game. The Vikings had problems with their bus, which caused them to be an hour late. The bus, which picked them up, had to be back to school by 3:30 p.m. Scoring points in the first game for Vernal were: Michelle Blaisure, 7; Chris Blaisure 4; Deah Bennion, 2; Joan Hacking, 1 and Julene Johnson, 1. A volleyball tournament will be held at Roosevelt Junior High, Thursday at 1 p.m. The meet will be a round robin tourney, which will consist of Roosevelt, Duchesne, West, Altamont . and Vernal. Vernal junior High girls' basketball tryout. will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, October 23, 24, and 25. The tryouts will be held on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. and will be held on October 24 and 25 from 4 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. |
