Show :im r ii (ill 1)1 one wfCELL , By Marie L. Godfrey Farewell friends Many of you know by now that my family and I are leaving Vernal for another part of the state, eager to take up new activities but reluctant to leave the old ones behind. We are especially sorry to leave our friends, including you, the unidentified readers of this column. Some have been making dire ' predictions that the local unit of the American Cancer Society will wither away. I couldn't disagree more! During the past several years, many have considered me to be the American Cancer Society. While I would be proud of that title; it is not true. When I first began as a volunteer, I knew that public awareness was essential to the proper functioning of the ACS local unit. And so I took every opportunity to put the ACS in the public eye. The cooperation of the Vernal Express, KVEL and KNEU has helped tremendously. I only wish I had been more imaginative with news photos! I am proud that many people of Uintah County now know some of the many activities possible through the ACS. I only wish that everyone really understood what this organization can do with citizen support. It is truly a volunteer-run organization and the paid staff really do listen to the requests and criticisms of the volunteers. All of the real work of the ACS, however, comes from the average person concerned t 1 rn 1 1 : aooui cancer anu leuuvv nuuidii ucuiga no amount of money can buy that! Yes, I am the American Cancer Society-but so are YOU! In fact, this year's conference identification badges stated just that, "I am the American Cancer Society," and these badges were worn by hundreds of volunteers from many different parts of Utah. The local ACS unit now is fully staffed by talented and trained volunteer workers: Sandra Madsen, President; Beverly Hamilton, Vice-president and Professional Education; Marilyn Thacker, Service; Corey Grua, Public Information; Velma Phillips, Public Education; Renee Shiner, Fund-raising; Fund-raising; Nettie Hale, Secretary and Dr. Patrick Mongan, Medical Advisor. With your help they'll see that Uintah County gets that "outstanding unit" award back next year! Cancer strikes human beings, not numbers. And it's going to take human beings to wipe it out. I hope you'll do vour part, and remember, WE ARE THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY!! |
