Show Snow closes schools Monday was the second day Manila Schools had been dismissed because of the snow. No school was held Wednesday Wed-nesday of last w eek follow ing a 15 inch snow as the road on the mountain was closed. Bus drivers had difficulty returning students to their homes Tuesday evening. Roads finally opened and the milk truck came over the mountain about noon. There was 24 inches on the road between Dutch John and Manila. Monday morning it was snowing and only one bus delivered students but was advised to take them home again. All other students were taken or sent home. Manila did have snow for Thanksgiving. It is estimated that 15 inches of snow fell last week although only 13.5 was measurable. It snowed after the measurements were taken and the wind drifted' it so no accurate measurement could be taken. From Monday to Sunday .79 inches of moisture fell. Manila experienced a new low-following low-following the storm of 2 degrees below-zero. below-zero. Snowfall in the mountains was 24 inches. Steve Rosser held a deer antler contest for the largest antlers according ac-cording to the Boon-Crockett total point system. Winner of this contest was Dandy Pollock of Manila, whose deer had a 35 inch spread, 20'2 inch tower, and had 14 points making a total of 69' 2 points. The runner-up was Frank Twitchell's buck with 57 4 total points. Steve Rosser has a collection of pictures proving that goose and duck hunting at Flaming Gorge is fabulous. The pictures show hunters from Manila, including Cury Harlacker, Steve and Dave Rosser of Manila and numerous other hunters, who have bagged their birds in Manila. The Daggett County Fine Arts Council promises that nothing will postpone the Larry Cantwell, "Yours Truly, Mark Twain" show to be held at the Manila High School gymnasium at 7:30 Friday, November 30. Tickets are being sold and will also be sold at the door. This promises to be an outstanding out-standing presentation. Larry Cantwell will be presenting Mark Twain as both a young and elderly man. Sue Tinker was home from Salt Lake City for Thanksgiving following surgery last week. Mr. and Mrs. Delor Maxfield and children of Bountiful, Utah visited the Duane Lambs for Thanksgiving. He was quite surprised at the snow in Manila. Mrs. Leon .lessen started to join her husband in Idaho the day after Thanksgiving, but had trouble between Lone Tree and Dutch John, so will try again this week after the weather has cleared. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Murphy spent Thanksgiving with their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Craig Larsen, in Orem, Utah. Some Manila residents attended the funeral of Mrs. Cordie Lamana Davis in McKinnon, Wyoming, Saturday. Mrs. Davis and her family lived in Manila during the clearing of the land for the Flaming Gorge Reservoir. Mr and Mrs. Fred Weeks of Vernal spent Thanksgiving with their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Weeks, Jr. Bishop and Mrs. Deri Reed spent Thanksgiving in Logan, Utah, with their daughters, Debbie and Derlene, who are attending schools there. Mr and Mrs. James Briggs and children returned from a trip just before Thanksgiving, where they visited with the Dalian Jessens m ' Harmony, Utah. The Jessens moved-from moved-from Manila in June of this year. |
