Show ira Uinfah'Ufe Wrestle s Some folks might think of the Wrestle Offs as being just an intramural contest between members of the Uintah High School team, but for the Uintah Utes' tusslers it is a battle between friends. Buddies, Kim Reid and Raymond Perry, remarked, "We both wrestled tough. It is hard to wrestle your friend. We are looking forward to a good season. We have been practicing hard. " Art Daley blanked Brent Hales, 5-0 in the 185 pound contest and he said, "Practice has been hard. It is hard to wrestle against your friend." Kay Smuin jumped out to a 5-0 lead in his match with Billy Bedell, but Bedell blanked Smuin in the final round, 3-0, to make the final score: Smuin, 5 and Bedell, 3. "It will probably be the toughest match I will have all year," stated Kay Smuin. "That's usually the way wrestle offs are at Uintah High School." The Foston Chivers-Cory McNeill encounter en-counter was a barn burner. McNeill had a 12 to 6 lead at the end of the second round, but Chivers rallied in the third round to . tie the match at 14-14. However, McNeill won the encounter when he gained a reversal with 3 seconds left in the match. "It went back and forth. There was a lot of shoulder blade slapping action in the match. There was too much," stated Cory McNeill. Foston Chivers scored 14 points, which is usually enough points to win a match, but McNeill gained two more counters at 16 for the win. "I'm out of shape," stated Chivers. "There were a lot of shoulder blades down on the mat." Chivers missed most of the 1978-79 season due to an injury. Uintah's Ken Cobbs came close to pinning Don Bohrer in the first, second and third rounds, but junior transfer from Craig, Colorado, Bohrer, refused to be flattened against the mat by Ken Cobbs, and the contest ended in a 12-0 decision for Ken Cobbs. "Don Bohrer is a pretty strong kid. The match was tough and I was out of shape," said Cobbs. Senior, Matt Hacking won his match with Mark Robb in the first round due to a pin. "Mark Robb shouldn't be discouraged, He is going to be tough. I pinned him with a sheepherder hold, which consists of a double arm bar and a half. He just fell into it," stated Matt Hacking. Monte Morris didn't wrestle last year, but he was able to defeat senior, Ron Horrocks, 9-1. "Horrocks is tough. My cradles worked. Practice has been pretty tough," remarked Monte Morris. Two sophomores, Randy Smuin and Jeff Good, competed in the Wrestle Offs. Good was edged by junior, Rick Huber, 4-2, and Smuin thumped Wayne Nichols, 14-4. "Good is a tough sophomore," stated Uintah's Huber. |
