Show Thanksgiving yields feast for preschoolers The Thanksgiving Season began at Country Meadows Early Education Center with an exploration of how people peo-ple lived long ago in comparison with our present life style. A trip to the DUP Museum was graciously hosted by Deon Merkley. There the children were able to see the differences in how the people "long ago" cooked, dressed and lived compared com-pared to how we live , today. The children then made their own hats of long ago to wear home as they pretended pretend-ed to be children of long ago. That some things never change was observed as the children visited with the school turkeys. "There's a Great Big Turkey on Country Meadows' Farm" was song robustly as the children listened to the torn turkeys go-ble go-ble and strut proudly for their curious guests. After their visit, the children made collages of their own turkey creations. Thanksgiving dinner is a special event at Country Meadows. The children began a week in advance to prepare their very own thanksgiving dinner. The children decorated their table covers by pasting and painting Thanksgiving designs to suit their fancy. fan-cy. Earlier units were recalled as the children prepared their own wheat rolls and pumpkin pies. The children prepared sweet potatoes and cranberries and observed that sweet potatoes looked like giant carrots and cranberries were like crab apples. No Thanksgiving dinner would be complete com-plete without turkey and dressing. Many little hands assisted the teacher as they washed the turkey and readied it for the oven. Carrots and celery were added to the dressing and then were cut into bite sized pieces to be served as" Thanksgiving accompaniments. The dinner was served on Wednesday, Wednes-day, Nov. 21. On that day the oldest children in each session were chosen to carve the turkey and to serve dinner to their classmates. Special Thanksgiving songs, fingerplays and stories made the time go fast until all the children were served serv-ed and ready for the Thanksgiving blessing song. When at last it was time to eat the feast, children and teachers alike realized the rewards of their efforts ef-forts and declared that this was the BEST Thanksgiving dinner EVER! |
