Vernal City is hearing protests of the action from neighboring land owners. - CONSTRUCTION has already begun on a 32 unit addition to the Motel Utah. Residents protest city vacating property Surrounding property owners protested pro-tested action of the Vernal City Council to vacate an eight-foot right-of-way for building an addition to Motel Utah. Three weeks ago Red Hatch, manager of Motel Utah met with the council and requested that either the city ci-ty grant him the right to build on the right-of-way or to have the city maintain main-tain the space between the sidewalk and the building. The council granted him the right to build on the ngm-of-way making it possible for a 32 unit.two story addition to be built flush with the sidewalk. "It will be an eye-sore and a sore thumb forever," said Alvin Kay, owner of the building housing Triangle Auto Parts. "I don't know what good a protest will do, but it could set a president for future actions," Kay added. "They (surrounding property owners) don't want us to build there because it will block their view," said Hatch. "If all these problems would have come to light before we started building, I would have put the wall eight feet in." New that construction has begun, the wall is going to be there no matter what." Kay indicated that he doesn't blame the property owners, "it's the city's fault". "The law says that they must advertise adver-tise to abutting property owners and that means across the street," Kay said. According to Shane Luck, city manager, all legal procedures were followed in vacating the right-of-way. "The council can in a public meeting vacate a right of way if the property owner owns all abutting property," Luck said. When the city was originally planned provisions were made for wider streets in case the city decided to make a street a main one it could widen them by moving the sidewalks out eight feet into a right-of-way. "The city needs to decide whether it wants the wider streets or not," Luck said, "so it can be uniform." "Decision destroys suspense, and suspense is the charm of existence."
