Show Some games suffered home run droughts, but in some encounters the batters produced homers, with ease. Such was the case in a consolation battle between the Basin Bailers and Dalbo in the Vernal Tournament, Saturday. The Basin Bailers were behind Dalbo, 7 to 1, going into the top of the second inning, but the Vernal team turned its home run power to full blast and produced three homers. Gary Huber, Dave King and Gene Gurr got on base and then Arvel Tassainer knocked them all in due to a grand slam blast. The next batter, for the Basin Bailers, Doyle Huber, also delivered a home run shot and two sluggers later Kenny Sutton belted a round tripper, which gave the Basin Bailers a 9 to 7 lead. Now it was Dalbo's turn to blast the Softball over the fence. Bill Fisher produced the first home run shot in the second inning and two more circuit clouts were delivered in the fourth inning. The first man up for Dalbo, John Gilbert, kissed the Softball goodbye good-bye as he smashed it over the fence. Bill Fisher gained his second homer of the game when he belted a two-run round tripper. The score at the end of the fourth inning was 16 to 14 in favor of the Basin Bailers. Scott Kavanaugh of the Basin Bailers also slugged "a homer in the fourth inning. A total of seven round trippers were gained in the wind aided contest. Home runs were the story in the first four innings, but free passes to first base were the main item in the final three innings, as the two teams went from blasting to walking. The Basin Bailers' Arvel Tassainer shocked the Dalbo hurler with a mighty grand slam in the second inning, and the team from Roosevelt decided that it was going to be careful the next time Arvel stepped n the batters' box. Dalbo , was extremely cautious with Tassainer in the third, fifth and sixth inning as they refused to give the Basin Bailer slugger anything good to hit and he received three free passes to first base. Vernal's Basin Bailers were just as careful when it was their turn to pitch. ' After Bill Fisher belted his second homer in the bottom of the fourth inning 5 out of 15 sluggers in the rest of the fourth inning and in all of the fifth and sixth innings were walked. Kelly Miller 4, of Dalbo received three walks in a row r in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, -r and John Gilbert and Bill Fisher received free passes to first base in the fifth inning after having belted home runs in the fourth inning. The home run and walk filled game was ended when Bart Morrill was tagged out at home plate on a perfect shot from Scott Kavanaugh to Ken Serre for the third out. If Morrill would have scored the game would have been tied at 20-20, but due to the out at home plate the Basin Bailers nipped Dalbo, 20-19. Vernal's Basin Bailers and Young's Paint clashed in a Softball tourney encounter. The Basin Bailers downed Young's Paint. 16 to 9. but the lead changed hands several times in the game. The game also featured some unusual defensive plays. Gary Huber and Ed Mott were chasing after the Softball in left field, and both runners crashed into each other, but Mott was able to hold onto the ball for an out. Kim Oliverson of Young's Paint also turned in an outstanding catch when he hugged the fence and came up with the ball for an out. The game also featured a three-run homer blast and a two-run round tripper by Brent Labrum of Young's Paint. Butch McCormack also attempted a close-to-the-fence catch, but he missed the ball, knocked a bicycle over and almost knocked the fence over as he dropped himself halfway over the fence. The mighty Babe Ruth hit 714 home runs, but he also finished high on the career strikeout list. Arvel Tassainer is known for his honte run power, but in the third inning of the game with Young's Paint he went down swinging. Tassainer almost gave himself whiplash as he struck out. One of his teammates remarked, "That curve ball will do it every time, Larry." Larry Fox of Young's Paint was the pitcher who mowed down Arvel Tassainer. However, Arvel redeemed himself in the next game when he blasted Dalbo pitcher, Dusty Mecham for a grand slam. The Basin Bailers encountered Iorg in the game, which decided the opponent op-ponent for Clover Club in championship contest, and interesting play involved first baseman, Arvel Tassainer. A ball was hit into the infield and Tassainer chased after it. He couldn't quite reach it, but he followed it with his glove and headed toward second base. At the last moment Tassainer looked up and noticed notic-ed he was about ready to smash into Steve Yack, so he leaped over the runner run-ner on second base. Tassainer, the first baseman, ended up in shallow center field cn the olay. Softball is a strange and fun game where the unexpected as well as expected ex-pected items occur. |
