J McCarty Executive Secretary Secretory Utah Education Association Student robots Get out of that bedl bed Brush your teeth Hurry and eat Dont Don't wear that Uial blouse Dont Don't be late Students please take your seats scats and nd begin exercise three on page Time for recess Dont Don't throw your lunch bags on the playground Why are you late getting home from school Make your bed Eat your peas Get your homework done Put your pajamas on its it's time for bed bert Sound familiar Those are the sounds that many a young person hears every very day After a few years of this many young people begin to hear lines such as Youre old enough to know better I HOW THOUGH does a youngster ever become old enough to know better If It he or she is treated as a robot One observer sums it up this way Most of the time a child is manipulated into situations and does not have many op opportunities opportunities to determine these situations and their outcomes thus it leaves him with a void when reaching the age at which he must cope with such situations on his own own Maybe we parents should all sit down consider our childs child's day and ask ourselves a few tew questions about it AM I I 1 SHOWING trust in my child Am I f helping my child to build independence Am I keeping a balance between proper direction and self self- fulfillment for my child After ACter asking ourselves these questions maybe well we'll give our children more opportunities to develop good judgment initiative and ambition And this I promise You'll derive more genuine pride from seeing your child accomplish something he or she conceived and implemented than any project you ever dream up and push that youngster into |
