Superintendent Have thanked you ever N your school board member The Uintah School District Board of Education comprised of President Billy Murray Vice President John Kenneth Anderton Kenneth Jenneth Aycock and Max Todd strive diligently to be your effective board As you can see see the job of a board member has become increasingly more more difficult They need your support and sustaining vote HAVE VE YOU CALLED UP AND THANKED YOUR SCHOOL BOARD nOARD MEMBER LATELY Why dont don't you do it today Your support will be worth wortha a million dollars to them for you to let them know you are behind them They work unselfishly for you and the meager remuneration they receive cannot counter the terrific importance of their calling It does not take much study or experience experience experience ex ex- ex- ex for a board of education to learn that its itc school district never seems to have enough money or em em- Employees demand larger salaries and smaller classes or duties Students want more courses and ac ac- ac- ac Parents seek seck special programs or curriculum for their cl children The government establishes mandates which take more of both money and staff Unfortunately it is a rare school district that does not have limits on the financial resources to meet these demands ALTHOUGH WE might long for a bottomless purse to fulfill all possible requests it does not seem likely that boards can expect to have available significantly greater resources in the future than they possess today Perhaps the best that may be hoped for foris foris foris is the available resources will at least keep abreast of inflationary trends To expect much more would appear to bemore be bemore bemore more fiction that fact The limited financial and human resources available to education place severe demands upon every board of education That's why good stewardship stewardship stewardship steward steward- ship must be practiced at all times by bythe bythe bythe the board There are no secrets to sound stewardship ship However there are some specific considerations that any school board can observe as it seeks to toI I allocate the the- resources that it has available to build an n educational program to meet the needs of young people in a changing world An effective board must set its' its priorities for spending its wealth and assigning professional personnel Wl While le establishing ng priorities seems seems to be a formidable task it is really no more complicated than determining what things the schools must do that are vital for young people The task of the board oard is to decide to what or extent-or how well well- they should be accomplished TilE THE BASIC ques question on is What are those things the schools must do first and how well should they be done Then the board cannot really ignore the fact that it will take greater financial and human resources to educate some children than it does others A school board should expect definite and measurable results from the resources it does allocate For too long we have been caught up in the psychology of more is better The proper question to ask today is What will be the measurable results of allocating more of our resources ItIs It Itis Itis is not easy for the board to say No to any request but every board should consider seriously the No stance unless the anticipated results of a aYes aYes aYes Yes answer seem worth the sacrifices The board needs to be realistic however They need to recognize that they have little control over the abilities of the students for whom it has responsibility And it should be remembered that the professional employees have no control over them either TilE THE EFFECTIVE VE board should strive to maintain a sense of balance between the old and the new-and new between a very narrow curriculum and andone andone andone one of considerable breadth The effective effective effective ef ef- ef- ef board realizes that schools cannot be all things to all people Like families we have budgets which limit what we can do The effective board member knows that it is not easy to adhere to guidelines guideline that will result in good stewardship p. p Citizens in every community community community com com- are demanding more and more services from their schools But at the same sam time the public fully expects the school board to guide them in the wisest possible use of those resources They expect the board to practice good stewardship |
