| Show Lets Let's 5 play Bridge By Juanita Oden The next few weeks we are going to tobe tobe tobe be discussing responses to one and two no trump opening bids We all know that with 14 10 high card points and a balanced hand band we jump to 3 no trump if our u o partner e b opens 1 noi no o trump rl Sometimes hand mayr may y be called a 0 balanced when we may have a worthless doubleton in it This This' type of hand may be set at 3 no trump ormay or orm may y make 4 or 5 spades or hearts if the 4 44 fit in one of the majors is discovered and bid All bridge players should learn the way to check back on this bid while they are learning the beginners bridge This method is called the Stayman Convention It goes like this The opener makes a bid of one no trump His partner has a 4 card major or maybe even both majors He lie responds 2 clubs If the no trump bidder has a 4 card major he bids it If he has two 4 4 card majors he bids spades first and names hearts next If he has no card 4 major he bids two diamonds and the responder makes the final decision on the contract If the responder has 10 points he will either bid 3 nt or 4 of the major suit if his partner names the one that fits 4 A hand came up Thursday evel evening ng that had a singleton club 4 hearts 4 spades and 4 diamonds in it lt This hand had 14 high card points in it The partner part part- ncr ner ope opened red one no trump The responder holding the hand above bid two clubs asking for a major The no trump bidder also had two four card majors so she bid two spades At this bid the above hand jumped in value to 17 points counting the singleton club three pointer A slam became possible She jumped to 4 spades promising 10 points and a game in spades Her partner passed not realizing the combined strength and the slam was missed Dont Don't forget to r evaluate re-evaluate valuate your hand once your partner has bid Your void becomes a count of 5 points your singleton is worth 3 points |
