| Show Echoes from the dust L Born in England Caroline Wardle was settler of Ashley Valley I I Among the early pioneers of Ashley Valley was Caroline K K Fisher Wardle remembered by some people today for her talent in singing and her dramatic presentations p Born in Lanchester England May 19 1850 she was the daughter of James and Eliza Carr Fisher At the age of 14 she was the leading soprano singer in inthe inthe inthe the Church of England and was the leading dramatic reader at the Sewing School for girls Her lIer remarkable talent in drama marked her later life In the year 1864 1004 she with her parents a married sister and a brother were converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Latter Saints and emigrated to Utah They crossed the Atlantic in eight days on the ship General McClellan with a group of IDS elders During the voyage black measles struck and many children died Carolines Caroline's sister lost two children with the disease TilE THE FAMILY settled in Kaysville Utah later moving to Midway It was in Midway she met and married George Wardle who was a pioneer of 1847 in Brigham Youngs Young's company The couple was married Dec 15 IS 1868 in the Endowment Endowment En En- House in Salt Lake City by Daniel H. H Wells They were the parents of five children four girls and one boy She and her husband were called taIled by bythe bythe bythe the President of the Church to help settle the communities in southern Utah While living in those communities communities communities com com- they joined the United Order undergoing many privations and hardships They were called to settle the Utah communities of Glenwood Midway Provo and and were then sent to the Uintah Basin to help pioneer Vernal While residing in Midway they formed a dramatic company and Mrs Wardle was leading lady in all the plays the presented They used to go to Salt Lake City and play in the old Pioneer Theater which was torn tom down just a few years ago She was also the main character in all the dramatic entertainments entertainments entertainments en en- in the early days in Vernal Mr and Mrs Wardle and four children were called by the Prophet Wilford Woodruff to Ashley Valley in November 1882 where they again endured endured en en- dured more r privations and n hardships ar helping settle this pioneer community They were both gifted singers and traveled all over the valley to furnish singing for funerals and other special occasions She was involved in all the activities of the Church holding the position of president of the Primary for several years and secretary of the Relief Society for 30 years TIER HER HUSBAND died November 23 1901 leaving her a young widow of 33 years of age In those days Social Security was unheard of and she did all kinds of work to support herself A janitor for 20 years at the Glines Ward School she retired in 1921 at the age of 71 In September 1917 she bought a ahome ahome ahome home for which at that time was a alot alot alot lot of money This home is still standing today and was the inspiration that prompted her granddaughter Enid Cook to write the poem which is at the end of this history This home is located at South and 1500 West in Glines Ward and is now owned by Keith Ross Peter and Mary Peterson homesteaded this land and received the patent on it in May 1888 Hezekiah Bryant bought the home from the Petersons in April 1904 It was was' sold by Hezekiah Bryant to James Reid on October 30 1907 Caroline K Wardle bought the home from James Reid September 26 1917 She adored her home which she kept spotless and she was very comfortable and happy for forthe forthe forthe the 14 years that she lived t there r She died April 24 1931 leaving a large posterity Her husband George Wardle had three wives during the time of polygamy and was the father of 24 children so there are many descendants in the Wardle family |
