| Show 4 MIt r i iI I V a 1 4 I r l 1 m p r PARTICIPATING IN THE Uintah High School I Dance Club Concert April 13 are a few of the twenty club members Going clockwise from the left front Debbie Caldwell Cheryl Burns Alison Taylor Cyd Workman Terri Hall and Debra Mace I I gets gets' CB equipment monitors Channel 9 Beginning in the spring of 1978 when motorists request emergency assistance over the CB Channel 9 they have a good chance of being answered answered answered an an- directly by a Utah Highway Patrolman or other law enforcement officers Utah is the third in the nation to be accepted into the National Emergency Aid Radio Plan NEAR The 1978 session of the Utah Legislature appropriated approximately approximately approximately ap ap- ap- ap proximately to the Utah Highway Highway Highway High High- way Patrol for the purchase of CB equipment Through the use of these funds the Highway Patrol will begin to install CB radios in all vehicles and CB monitors in each of the fourteen 24 hour manned Port of Entry stations and communications centers In addition other law enforcement agencies in Utah may receive Federal Highway Safety grants for this same purpose TilE THE IMPETUS for scale full-scale participation participation participation par par- in the NEAR plan came as a result of previous experimental use of CB equipment in selected fleet vehicles The value of such equipment in terms of quick response to emergency situations proved to be immeasurable thus leading to a CB monitoring program Beginning in late 1976 the Utah Highway Highway Highway High High- way Patrol officially authorized full use of CB by the Troopers Subsequently over Troopers purchased and installed CB radios in their vehicles at their own expense The personal initiative of the Troopers immediately resulted in a more effective effective effective ef ef- motorist aid system In one instance alone the CB report of a accident resulted in the saving of some 20 minutes of critical response time r By using CB CBs s in addition to their regular radio equipment enforcement officers will be able to increase the listening coverage of the CB Channel 9 which is officially reserved by the FCC for motorist aid and emergency use only The CB equipment will also enable a faster emergency response to those requests for help that are received by the officers while they are in their patrol cars Specially appointed Highway Patrolmen in all areas of the state will begin contacting the many efficient volunteer clubs who now monitor the emergency Channel 9 in order to encourage encourage encourage en en- courage their participation and the operation of the N NEAR AR plan with those groups |
