| Show j Na Y PLACING AT A SPEECH CONTEST at Vernal Junior High on March 29 were left to right Ron Baxter second Brenda Wilcox first a and d Stacy Voorhies third Vernal Junior High students nab honors at speech meet Fourteen students competed in the Vernal Junior High Speech Contest on March 29 in Vernal Wayne Gurney speech instructor at Vernal JUl Junior or High remarked I think the speech contest was one of the best ones we have had We had more kids enter this year than we have had before The students worked really hard and I was pleased with all ll their speeches Brenda Wilcox captured first place Inthe in inthe inthe the contest with a speech against the Equal Rights Amendment Ron Baxter nabbed second place with a speech on violence in sports Stacy Voorhies garnered third place Her speech was wason wason wason on capital punishment OTHER STUDENTS who competed in the speech contest were Susi Feltch Lori Greenhow Leslie Biggs Scott Welch Patricia Richardson Kalene Hansen Bill Phillips Tammie LeBeau Kim Booher Paul Hacking and Jerry Mired Alfred Allred and Hacking are eighth graders of the students are lID graders The students were judged on content and speaking skills Content consisted of originality freshness directness knowledge of topic skill in selecting examples description analogies and specific data logic correctness of ofil il inference and comprehensiveness of knowledge The speaking skills were voice diction language use word arrangement transition word selection body action poise eye contact posture and gestures The time limit for the speeches was 8 to 10 minutes The students were penalized for being under or over the time limit JUDGES OF the contest were Jana Kunz Beverly Whitaker and Judy Landsaw The timekeeper was Carol Feltch Students at Vernal JUl Junior or High can take Speech 1 as an eighth or ninth grader and they can also take Speech 2 i t |
