Show New home destroyed o met n midnight fire fare As people were tuned into the second game of the World Series Wednesday Oct 10 they were interrupted in watching the game by the showing of live film footage depicting an apartment building blaze occurring occurring occurring oc oc- oc- oc several blocks away from Yankee Stadium Many viewed that scene with detached impersonal feelings some may possibly have commented on the beauty of it as the sky lit up with the dancing dancing dancing dan dan- cing impressions of the flames licking at al the wood stretching higher and higher in its quest for precious oxygen Just a scant four hours later a tragic fire became a personal reality to the Corey Grua household in Maeser as a fire believed started by an overheated triple insulated chimney pipe swept through their Maeser home with surprising surprising surprising sur sur- swiftness and deadly ease early Thursday morning from which the five member Grua family escaped with wilh relatively minor injuries destroyed the house and nearly all their personal possessions including many irreplaceable antiques Shortly after aCler midnight the Grua's were aroused into a race-against-death race action after Marilyn tarilyn awoke to three foot high flames dancing up the staircase towards the second floor where she and her husband and three children were sleeping Reacting with a survival Marilyn and Corey sprung into action to save their young children from a fiery fate Marilyn tarilyn immediately went into the room where the two oldest children Emily and Julie were sleeping and awakened them While Corey broke a window in another part of the upstairs area to go for a ladder Marilyn broke a window to drop her two oldest daughters to 10 the ground During puring the course of breaking the window Marilyn sustained gashes on her arm and hand requiring 30 stitches to close When Corey returned to the window where Marilyn was they discovered the couples couple's youngest daughter Melissa had not been taken from the crib that was standing next to the parents parent's bed in the other room Marilyn ir informed ormed Corey about Melissa's predicament whereupon hereupon the f father ther moved into action to lo remove his child from the inferno CORKY olm moved the ladder to the window adjacent to the baby's crib Upon climbing it and peering into the room he found the room dense with smoke making makiM it impossible for forthe the baby to be seen Corey took a deep breath and reached in for Melissa l whose crib was fortunately near the window Coreys Corey's hand found the limp body that was buried under a huge pil pile of blankets After taking the ladder to Marilyn which she climbed down the three of them went to a small small- trailer behind the burning house where the two oldest girls had gone Once inside the trailer Mari Marilyn and and Corey noticed Melissa l was unconscious and not breathing Toe The two applied mouth to resuscitation until she was able to lo breathe on her own She was later taken to the Childrens Children's Primary Hospital in Salt Sail Lake City for treatment of smoke inhalation Her ter mother and sister Emily joined her there for two days before the three of them returned to Vernal Saturday night The Grua's spent the rest of that tragic night at al the Uintah County Hospital where the shock of the experience slowly wore ore off as relatives and friends continually called offering support condolences and help helpin in rebuilding the material l portions of their lives The Grua's plan on renting inthe inthe in inthe the Maeser l area before returning to the task lask of rebuilding rebuilding re re- re building their house With the help and support of the people who ho responded to lo the tragedy by providing food clothes and furniture the Grua's life will go goon goon goon on as before to a small degree Their lives will never be exactly the same after such a tragedy yet they feel their values have been altered a bit During the fire Marilyn found out just what is really important important important im im- im- im When it was coming down to the loss of a loved one one or the loss of an antique dining room table the choice was not hard to 10 make |
