Show One of the speakers at the recent "Liberal" convention in Salt Lake - the same that nominated Zan Vile for Delegate to Congress - insisted on having the party change its name. He wanted it to be called the "American" party. We second the motion for a change of name and next move that it change its raiment, wash itself, and that it purge itself of hypocrisy, venality, falsehood, mendacity and the corruption that permeates its every artery. To do this would, it is true, require it to turn itself inside out, and reconstruct itself upon an entirely different platform, after an entirely different model from the original. It is notorious that people of bad character frequently resort to a change of name as a substitute for a new or purged reputation. But the gross misnomer of "Liberal," as applied to the party in Utah that has fathered the most detestable schemes for the tyrannical oppression of American citizens, and the abrogation of their civil rights and religious liberties, that were ever introduced in Congress, should be gotten rid of. We object, however, to the name "American" being applied to that party, for if it is, within the broad domain of our glorious Union, a set of men whose politics and ideas are the antipodes of those recognized throughout the world as American and republican, that set of men now sad under the name of "Liberals in Utah." It would be quite difficult to suggest a name for the party that boasts of its "Liberal" principles, to who Utah is indebted for by far the larger share of crime, drunkenness, prostitution, litigation, and other evils that afflict our Territory to some extent. But any name that suggests pure motives, honest designs or a republican form of government will be a misnomer, if applied to them. |
