Show IDAHO POLITICS. The campaign in Idaho this fall promises to be an unusually close and exciting one. Heretofore the Democrats have had an easy time in gaining the victory at elections that were fairly and honestly conducted, and have had an unquestionable majority throughout the Territory. The Republicans claim, however, that the great influx of miners into the Wood River country will give them the victory this time. They claim the votes of the miners on the ground that the latter will not vote with a party that will affiliate with the "Mormons" as they accuse the Democrats of doing. The Democrats, on the other hand, claim that the "Mormon" immigrants into the territory will all vote with them, and that they are numerous enough to nearly or quite offset the votes of the miners who may unite with the Republicans to fight "Mormonism" and true democracy. Hon. Geo. Ainslie who has represented the territory in Congress for two terms, is the democratic candidate for delegate. Hon. T. F. Singiser, who has held several Federal offices in the Territory, is the Republican nominee. The increasing numbers and influence of the "Mormon" element in Idaho is creating a great deal of jealousy on the part of the Republicans, who might more properly be termed the "anti-Mormon party." Their nominee for Congress is a pronounced anti "Mormon" of decidedly rabid proclivities. |
