Show ROUBLED EGYPT. What a "nice" time the English army must be having in Egypt, working under a broiling sun, with a scant supply of water, and that, in many instances, poisoned by the dead bodies of men, or the carcasses of animals thrown into it. Travelers say that from the depot at Alexandria right up to the gates of Cairo, there exists one unbroken flat of country, rioting in luxurious vegetation wherever water runs, and a barrenness like the desert itself wherever it does not. The dust is simply indescribable. Despite the Venetian blinds of the railway cars, the floors, walls, seats and roofs are literally covered with grit, soon after a journey has commenced. Every car inside presents the appearance of a miniature sandstorm. To crown the climax, flies and mosquitoes are innumerable, and everywhere wandering hands of Arabs are roaming for plunder. |
