Show WHAT IS THE OBJECT? Editor Leader - Attending the Sunday school Union last Sunday evening and hearing the songs, recitations, &c. of the children and the remarks and speeches of the "older ones," I was wondering what the real object of this reunion is; whether it is meant for the old folks or the children, or both. Whether it is supposed to be amusing or instructive in its nature. Whether the children are supposed to entertain, amaze? amuse? or instruct the old, or the old the children. If as some one remarked?, it is for the children to display before their parents what they learn during the month in their respective Sabbath schools, I believe it fails in the object, as it appears that the exercises are gotten up for the occasion. If it is for amusement ought it not to be kept in some other place, and on some other day? If its aim is to entertain by instructing, ought not the very best talent and skill to be brought forward in place of the younger ones of the members? As some of the old fail to interest, is it likely children can do it? Of course there are always a few who are interested in a child's part simply by being interested in the child itself, but what of the rest? I mean those whose children have no part, and those who have no children, not to mention those who show no interest till an accident happens such as the little girl stumbling the other night. What is its aim and object any how? SPECTATOR. Logan, Dec. 6, 1880. |
