Show FROM THE ALTAR TO THE HALTER. -- At Madrid, Sept. 22d [22nd], that was such a wedding as, happily, the world has seldom seen. Alvares? Oliva and a young woman with whom he was intimate, had been convicted of murder, and sentenced, the man to strangulation, and the woman to ten years in prison. As the day of execution approached they asked leave to marry, that their five-year-old daughter might be legitimated. On the morning of the last day the convicts were brought together and married, then having exchanged rings and promised faithfulness until death should part them, the chaplain having declared them man and wife, and pronounced the blessing of the church upon them, the bridegroom was led to the scaffold, and within a few minutes after his marriage, had ceased to live. |
