Four lives in all were lost by the Madison Square Garden disaster. <br><br> The reports of the death of King Thebaw of Burmah and the alleged human sacrifices at Mandalay are contradicted as untrue. <br><br> PANAMA, April 18. - Peruvian advices say that the transport Oroya has just returned to Callao, after repeating the exploits of the Union. She ran past the Chilian fleet in the night, visited Pocopollo, destroyed some launches and captured a small steamer. The Oroya then proceeded to ??? and discharged arms and ammunition for a brigade organized in ??? <br><br> Campero, the new Bolivian president, is on his way to Parua with 3,000 men which, with the forces at Arica, will place the strength of the allied army at about 31,900 men. The Chilians are gradually extending their lines toward Pacus?. <br><br> SAN FRANCISCO, April 23. - Just before eight this evening, Charles De Young entered the business office of the Chronicle on the ground floor on the corner of Kearny and Bush streets, and stood talking with some gentleman, leaning against the counter. Directly the door opened and ??? Kallock, son of Mayor Kalloch, entered and, drawing a pistol without - as far as can be learned - speaking a word began firing at De Young. The latter ran through the gate? of the counter to the desk inside, Kalloch firing at him as he ran. On reaching the desk, De Young turned to face his opponent with a pistol in his hand, when Kalloch leaning over the counter fired again, a ball striking De Young in the mouth. Kallock then started for the door. De Young raised his pistol as if to fire, but apparently his strength failed him, for the pistol was not discharged and sinking backward he fell on the floor. The bystanders ran to his assistance, but the ball had evidently pierced the base of the brain and in a few moments he expired. <br><br> NEW YORK, April 24. - Thirteen children among the passengers of the steamship Ohio, from Bremen, died during the voyage. <br><br> LONDON, April 24. - The Christian committee telegraphs that a terrible famine is raging throughout ???? and Kurdistan. Immense masses are starving, the Christians are crawling hither for relief. Our resources are totally inadequate to meet the necessities. A public meeting will be held at the Mansion House, at London. <br><br> NEWFOLK?, VA., April 23. - The tidings of the terrible work of the fires in the swamp region of North Carolina last week, have reached here. Much life and property has been destroyed, houses and woods devastated. Zachariah Owens, engaged in ??? ??? from the swamps in Aligator ???, lived there in a house surrounded by the woods. On Saturday he left his home on business, but had not gone far, before he saw the flames approaching so rapidly as to ??? the house and family. He hastened back to save them. He hurried his wife and three little children away, hoping to reach the main road, beyond danger, but they were all overtaken by the flames in the swamp, midway between the home and the place of safety, and the entire family burned to death. The bodies were found the next day by neighbors, [unreadable line] the father and the other ??? children lying near. <br><br> HAVANA, April 24. - The total loss by the recent fire at Samana is $ 430,000. <br><br> Gen. [General] Cora, connected with political disturbances in San Domino, has been shot. <br><br> In a recent engagement between the Spanish troops and the insurgents the former lost six killed and two officers wounded. The insurgents loss was seventeen. <br><br> CONSTANTINOPLE, April 23.-The powers have addressed a collective note to the ??? demanding the frontier evacuated last week, and since occupied by the Albanians, be immediately re-occupied by the Turks then surrendered to the ??? in accordance with the terms of the convention<br><br> CHICAGO, April 23. - The following are additional particulars of Saturday night's storm: At Ashland, Ills. [Illinois], several thousand dollars worth of property were destroyed, in a heavy hail alternated with rain which continued all night, flooded the streets, and permeated the cellars and basements. At Farmer City, Ills. [Illinois] the creeks and sloughs are higher than ever known before, fences, culverts, bridges, walks, etc., being carried off. Charles ???? was drowned while trying to cross a creek on bare back. At Kankakee an almost unprecedented amount of water fell, the river rose five feet, the farm lands were flooded and work will be delayed two weeks. Much ??? sown grain will be drowned out. Near Taylorsville, the cyclone was terrific, many houses being demolished and inmates crippled, killed or carried away and still missing. Many are rendered homeless by the storm which lasted from 7 p.m. until midnight. Alonzo Culler's house was blown to atoms, one of his children killed outright and another carried off and found dead in the morning. Mrs. J.P. Langley was killed, John Gossner had his skull fractured and he will die. A man named Watts and his wife were blown about a quarter of a mile, locked in each other's arms and were found badly cut, [unreadable] W. Brenez; Mr. Flint, wife and two children, a little daughter of Ed Leigh, and Thomas Hill. Hundreds of cattle, sheep, and hogs, were crippled and killed, fowls were found in the line of the cyclone, dead and divested of their plumage. Reports of the damage are constantly being received at Taylorsville, and relief measures for the destitute are being taken. <br><br> It seems that the storms of last week in their extent, violence and destruction have never been equaled in this part of the country. <br><br> The San Francisco Workingmen have placed a guard of twenty-two men, taken from their ????, on duty at Mayor Kalloch's house to prevent the intrusion of undesirable parties, who, they think, might be intent on some desperate act. <br><br> NEW YORK, April 27. - The marriage of the Princess of Hanover to her father's secretary caused considerable friction in highest circles. <br><br> King Thebaw of Burmah is again reported as dangerously ill and attempts are being made to stay the disease by sacrificing virgins. <br><br> The post of West Point is likely to be attached to the department of the east, as public confidence in its management has been destroyed. <br><br> King Karl of Wurtenburg, Germany, has given his consent to the betrothal of Princess Paulina to a young physician practicing in Breslau. <br><br> The house committee on post offices has resolved to report as wise and expedient the establishment of ???? mail steamship routes to be served by American built vessels at just and proper rates of compensation. |
