Show Public Domain and Stock Ranges There is considerable discussion as to the final disposition of the public domain. Hoover proposed to give the surface rights to the states. Governor Dern and most of the western statesmen, states-men, object, ibeeause the surface rights would be a liability instead of an tisset. They are probably right and Hoover has apioluted a commission to study the matter. But, pending that issue, there Is another matter of a very considerable importance and that Is the use of the pasture on the Forest' Reserve. Probably Prob-ably the entire public domain should be used for the people who own and are farming their own lands, and in proportion to their holdings, except, that any farmer should have a minimum min-imum of a pasture right on the public domain. That pasture right at this time is limited to only a few, and others outside of the county are given pasture pas-ture rights on the Forest Reserve, that should be given to the men on ranches within the counties. Pig sheepmen who reside outside largely monopolize the range, when the pasture rights should be given to cattle men within the counties where they reside. It is a well known fact that certain foreigners Greeks, are using a large part of the pastures for sheep. These rights should be reserved for the home ranchers within the county, for they are the people that need encouragement and an opportunity; opportun-ity; to make a little money in their fight to make farming pay. Put, many of these farmers are forbidden the public domain pustnres, because these certain foreigners have the right to these pastures. And lhee certain public pastures probably should be withheld for the pasture of cattle for the farmers actually living within the county. These matters should be studied by the people and they should organize ond bring these matters to the attention of their congressmen in order that a just system of pasturage of the public domain could and would be equitably applied to farmers of the counties where said pastures are located. |
