Show County Agent News Fruit growers will need to give more attention to pruning and thinning this year. Lloyd Smith, Duchesne County Agent, explains that this is made necessary nec-essary by last year's frost. Where the frost killed the fruit on peaches, sweet cherries, apricots and apples last year, the trees grew much more vegetation vege-tation than usual. They will also be more vigorous than usual this year vith a heavier set of fruit. To et quality fruit, these trees must be pruned well and early thinning must be done. Otherwise, if we have a normal year, the set of fruit will be too s heavy for the trees to support the load. Main branches will be broken, fruit will be small and off color and foilage will be too thick to do a good job of 1 spraying. Much hand thinning will be required on stone fruits to get the quality fruit that sells best. No chemical can yet be recommended recom-mended by the Univ. for thinning thin-ning stone fruits. Chemical thinning thin-ning can be done oh apples but. some hand thinning will be necessary nec-essary to do a satisfactory job, Lloyd Smith said. |
