Show F UEL FUEL WASTE fsr WA A S TE TESTED TES TED government EXPERTS FIND USES FOR CULM AN AND DS SLACK LACK results of experiments with coal of all kinds are published by the united states state geological survey rhe hie results of the work mork done at the unite I 1 states slates fuel testing plant at amest park st louis florn january I 1 lob to june 30 1907 are presented in a just issued by the united states geological sur bur vey the scope of the work during the period covered has been largely ro strict stricter ed to a series of compain tive tests testa made under conditions condl llona as nearly uniform as possible on bituminous coals and from different fields of the unita states as aa rt presenta tive of known extensive deposits chemical analyses were made of samples of these fuels collected at the mines by united states Inspect inspectors ois sent out for that purpose and also of samples token taken from the cars care from the fuel as aa tu ild to the boilers as fed to the producers po lucers beffie bri before and after washing and before coking samples of coal and coke coka were also analyzed and the results of the entire series of abaly ses sea and tests are presented in the i leport the tests to which he be fuel samples were subjected comprised steaming tests to determine the value of the fuel and the relative amount of energy it will furnish when ben used un ua dor der tho the boiler in connection with a steam engine as compared to the en ergy obtainable from the same barn fuel when used ira in a gas gaa broduer pro duer and ga engine and also to determine methods of burning fuel without smoke and in such a manner as to secure the high est effiegene enic effie lenci tene in tho the combustion chain her ft washing ashing tests testa to determine the possibility of improving the quality of the coal and the availability of such mashed cashed coal to fo the production ol 01 0 coke coking tests to determine possibility of utilizing the various arlous coals in this way or of improving cok ing practice tests to determine the extent to which slack or waste coal can be economically made into briquettes and steaming ests on briquettes to dete determine the relative and absolute efficiency of this form 0 of coa coal as compared with ith that i obtained with other bolms i the producer pro duter gas investigations lave continued to show the availability if f bituminous coals and lignite and peat rich a volatile matter for the production of power and have also indicated the he lines along which im ments in gas producer construe ion might reasonably be expected jn in order that the producer may utilize advantageously all varieties of hi bi coal and especially low rade fuels now being wasted masted the bri plant has hag developed new possibilities in the utilization utilisation ol of slack coal and anthracite culm as an efficient fuel fu e I 1 for f or combustion C 8 tion oo 00 0 B locomotives to co both in express service sor vice where a smokeless cless fuel is required on en bering trl 6 large cities and I 1 in heavy freight service where high efficiency in haul ing over steep grades is required tot foi a limited period experiments am now being extended to determine the value of coal for use ties in the naval vessels of the united states the plant at forest park was die mantled in march 1907 the sections of steam producer gas and braquet ting were transferred to a new gas plant erected at norfolk va and those of coking and to a new at bluver the principal chem chein leal ical laboratory of the fuel testing plant has been removed to pittsburg but a branch laboratory will also be maintained at norfolk for the purpose of experimenting on the gasps gases in dif ferent portions of tho the combustion char chambers ibers of steam boilers and of gas gae product rs the smoke abatement in at public buildings will be supplemented by more detailed ex perl pert ments at the norfolk folk plant |
