nearly all of them special ests in their particular lines it Is rea sol lable to expect something surpass ing any pageant ever glyen in ahlff country the contrast between tile the very high character of the pageant next neit october and the one 25 ears ago Is likely to tc be striking the advance made here in all lines of 0 art and decoration decoi atlon and not to a siy aty ty knowledge has been such during the quarter century which has elapsed as to mariant wan ant the assertion that those who witnessed the display in 1882 and who see that of next autumn will mill at once re recognize the of the latter the fhe celebration in 1882 was ar ranged with mith as much skill and ag much art as was mae then obtainable it was notwithstanding its enormous enoi defects the roost most ambitious display of its lt kind that had been up to that time witnessed la in this country the pageant however was not generally re carded as a success in the ali list at place it was mas shown at night and dla dis plays which now would be easily ab tab lable were mere not even imagined then the 37 floats which the procession were ere shown in ili three divisions the first of these dealt with the past motor of philadelphia the second was a sort of mardi acardi giac show of the famous women of history and the third an even more foreign addition as it depleted depicted scenes from the life of rama clearly it was because the imigine eions of the persons in control could not conceive more than ten ideas tor for philadelphia historical floats that these excrescences were brought in they were solely lugged in to lengthen out the procession cession and AS waa as evl evi dent to ever one had nothing to do with the landing of penn illumination ass mss wa s provided by the method then much in vogue for night procession the calcium thare was one calcium light to each float either ding or following the float RS as tho the case d demanded there also men walking alongside of the floats with lights which did not always pro provide ode the kind ot of illumination de elderd then them too the characters on the floats appen appeared red to have much tilt dk faculty in mainlining their position and the float representing penn re calving the charter bioni charles 11 II suffered most fiam this difficulty in deed many of 0 the floats in actual use were ere almost lidl ildi culous in ili effect neaily neacy all these floats were provided with short posts reaching to the hips of the and intended to provide the latter with a purchase the attempts of the ebar characters aLters to keep keen from falling off some borne of the tha lagona gone amused the small boys boya who aho occasionally shouted voids of enczur argement to the participants that pait of the pageant chica had noth ing in common with the event cele berated seemed to most please tile the crowds ahe I 1 he reason foi this lay in tho fal fail that on these the characters ais bally were shown in a seated position which they could maintain easily and gracefully walla title the trucks hearing bearing the floats rumbled over the street pavement in the alist ision di of the pageant the scenes represented were perin re rel ing the charter the landing of renit penn at philadelphia great law or hame of 0 so go ariment at philadelphia on abill 2 1683 penn discussing the tha boundary with lord baltimore
