Show IF tooele thoele s first band pictured before uniforms arrived ft A v 4 7 J 5 if t IA e S pf 1 I all through the history of early tooele thoele runs interesting events of music and bands and the part they played in cheering the hearts of the pioneers who came to a desert valley to make a home great praise is due the memory of the members of these mus c circles and the part they played in the so cial life of this community the f musical group to fune in tooele thoele was organized in the ear ly 50 s shortly after the settle ment of the valley this was the fife and drum corps this musical unit functioned until 1863 mem bers of this fife and drum corps were john marsden sr charles warr wm lee louis bowen rob ret shields richard henwood in 1863 the newly organized and first martial band played its first con cert on july ath this band took part in all community celebrations and played under the old bowery erected on the corner of main and vine members of this first band were ike lee john shields sr jardy smith gabe utley eh eli lee robert shields george atkin and B 11 burnett in 1866 the following men were added to this band aaron bracken bud lee dan james B 11 charles warr john A bevan herbert adams moroni england and jim smith the above mentioned bands con aisted mostly of fifes and drums and cornets then in the early 70 s when andrew galloway was may or of tooele thoele thomas croft came to tooele thoele bring ng with him some band instruments from the mm min utes of tooele thoele city dated june 18 1872 the following information was taken A committee was formed to interview thomas croft in re gards to organizing a brass band and the brass instruments belong ing to the city were turned over to mr croft for safe keeping it was then that tooele thoele s first brass band was organized with the fol lowing members thomas croft leader and director john shields robert mcclaud john mccaus richard henwood james kirk sr tomas croft jr henry queen john england wm elkington sr alvin mccuish on and moroni eng I 1 land later mr croft moved to idaho and the city was without a band for a short time mr me mc cuistion contacted mr elkington john shields robert shields nels johnsen salomon isgreen robert mcclaud and wm win cawles each man contributed and a new set of instruments were purchased and tooele thoele again boasted a good band under the able leadership of alvin mccuistion in the minutes of tooele thoele city dated 1872 we read where this band was given bermis sion to use the new city hall now the pioneer city haal for tices cices if the band would agree to leave the hall in good condition and furnish its own light and fuel john shields took over the leader ship of the band and the following were the members of this band john shields cornet alvin me mc cuis culs tion cornet robert mcclaud cor net solomon isgreen alto horn nels johnsen bass horn sam johnsen clarinet and flute james kirk cymbals john marsden pic allo robert shields snare drums frank besley trombone richard henwood base drums john fraizer drums and james kirk camble in 1898 alvin mccuistion appeared be fore the city council asking for 00 for band uniforms the re quest was granted and tooele thoele boasted asted a fully organized and first fu fully 1 y unformed un formed band tooele thoele depended on the band for all entertainments and early on a holiday morn ng before sun up the band would cl mb into the band wagon a vehicle specially built for the occasion consisting of a large platform built on wagon run ners and outfitted with benches for the players and the band would serenade the town putting every one in a holiday spirit the last fully organized band be fore 1900 was as follows john shields robert shields james gal laher barn m gallaher nels johnsen lyman mcbride james kirk dr F M davis wm john fraizer F frank rank besley alvin me mc cuistion solomon isgreen richard henwood john marsden robert mccaus the picture is of members of pioneer band before the uniformed band was organized |
