Show 0 . v TIMPANOGOS TIMES August 17,2011 OtfgTfr : i::z::::.: : PG Kickers Quiet Westlake Thunder 4-- 1 , but Suffer 3-- 1 Mauling at Mountain View by Dean Von Memmott The Pleasant Grove Vikings opened their 2011 girls' soccer season with a split in two road games. At Westlake on August 9, the Vikings quieted the West-lak- e Thunder 4-- 1. However, in an August 1 1 game in Orem, the Mountain View Bruins mauled Pleasant Grove 3-- 1. Viking Coach Caitlyn Young said, "In the Westlake game, Taylor Kirk scored two goals for us. Morgan Quaren- - berg and Kristen Reynolds, also, each kicked in a goal for us. Westlake scored their only goal on a penalty kick." , The first half of the Moun-tain View game went down as a defensive battle. During that period, Vi-king goalie Alicia Daniels and her Bruin counterpart, Nicole Smith, didn't let any shots zip past them. One of Daniels' most mem-orable heroics for the game oc-curred when Bruin Kiona Chris-tense- n carried out a breakaway play early in the opening period. The Bruin kicked a direct shot towards the goal. Daniels hur-ried into the shot's path and in-tercepted the ball. Led by seniors Lydia An-derson and Britney Johnson, the Vikings made frequent pen-etrations of the Bruins' territory. Young said, "In the first half, our girls played with posses-sion." Maddie Giles kicked up a lot of Viking attacks during the first period. Giles' kicks would often launch the ball way past the halfway line, and Sam Daly would dribble the ball into good areas for shots. Steals by Ashleigh Warner and Olivia Hoddy helped Smith in delaying the Vikings from get-ting onto the scoreboard first. Nevertheless, Mountain View could not prevent Pleasant Grove from securing the first lead. During the start of the second half, the Vikings had Kenedii Williams replace Dan-iels in the goalie spot. The re-placement kept the Bruins from getting anything into the. net during the period's first 20 min-utes, frustrating Warner, Carli Wright, and other Mountain View starters. Meanwhile, five minutes into the second half, John-son scored a goal for Pleasant Grove. Young said, "After we had scored that goal, we simply gave up playing aggressively. The Bruins smelt a let-u- p, and they took advantage of it. They kept the ball on the Pleasant Grove side as often as the Vi-kings did on Mountain View's territory. In the final 20 minutes, Mountain View sunk its claws into the momentum and snatched it away from the Vikings. The snatch occurred when Hoddy tied the game through a shot she booted in from just outside the Viking penalty box. Chris-tense- n broke the tie a few min-utes later. Seconds before the final whistle sounded, Warner booted in the third Bruin goal. The Vikings will open their home season with a 7 p.m. game against the Keams Cougars on August 18.
