Show Schools Across Utah OpenDoors for Another Year The end of August and the beginning of September will mark the end of the summer for more than 300,000 school age youngsters in Utah this l year. Although an exact count wi!l not be available until Octo- )er, statistical research provided pro-vided by the Utah State Board of Education suggests approximately 306,200 children chil-dren will be attending Utah's public schools during the 1972-73 school year. Granite School District will have the largest enrollment of Utah's 40 school districts pith an estimated 63,674 students. stu-dents. Daggett School District located in the northeast corner cor-ner of the state will have the lowest with a projected enrollment of between 200 to 300. A corps of approximately 12,000 teachers will staff Utah's classrooms with an additional 2,00o certified per-" sons backing them up in ' principal, counselor, media specialist (librarian) and other positions. In all Utah has 585 jmblic schools ranging from modern and freshly built multTclass-room multTclass-room structures to one -room school houses such as the Bullfrog Elementary School in southern Utah. Of these schools 92 are high schools, 86 junior high schools, and 407 elementary schools. All of this education costs a lot of money. For the past few years, Utah has spent annually an-nually more than a quarter of a billion dollars on tTie schooling of its young people. This makes education the biggest business in Utah. Nearly one out of every three people in the state is attending at-tending a public school. The 1972-73 school year will begin during the week of Aug. 28-Sept. 1 for most students. stu-dents. Carbon District will jump ahead with its opening scheduled for Aug. 23. Alpine, Al-pine, Emery, Nebo, North Sanpete, Piute, South Sanpete, San-pete, and Provo will start Aug. 24. Other districts will start as late as Sept. 5. .. All districts except South Sanpete and Salt Lake will have 180-day school years. Those two districts will have one . additional day -bringing their school year to 181 days. . For most students the first holiday of the year will be "teacher's . institute" of the Utah Education Association Convention scheduled for Sept. 28-29. Some districts have scheduled a "harvest vacation day" durjng the latter lat-ter part of October, and in Grand County, a special Monday Mon-day is taken off the. first weekend of deer season.
