Show f Spotlight on Sports BY DON ROBINSON Wc arc in trouble for water on the mountains this year. Sunday, I drove all the way to Oowah Lake along Mill Creek and it looked like July, not mid-May. Mill Creek, usually a torrent at this time of year, looked like it did last August. There is still some snow pack to come off the peaks and high basins which may raise waten levels, but right now things do not look good for the fishing waters wc have We may get some spring storms, but the weather pattern certainly isn't that promising this year. Sports fans have had some breaks this year locally. To start with we had six home football games last fall and will have five next year. In baseball we had one playoff here and now the state championship will be decided on the Moab field. In track, the best teams and individuals the state has to offer have competed here. The quality was such that only three of the sixteen field records survived the year. t if. I ; I ; The system for qualifying entries in the state track meet is presently uniair. Only three boys make it in each event and only one relay team goes. It took a 10.2 1U0 yard dash to just make the finals here Friday. Region Re-gion i'ivc equalled the region's record at 10.4. Six of this region's sprinters were under that figure. Eight of the local quartermilcrs ran under the winning time of 55.0 in Region Five. Five of the fifth place men in Region J Six could have been region champs elsewhere. That's; sad. Sad too is a winning high jump of 5'7" in Region j Five when the state meet starts the bar at 5' 10". Six feet did not make, it at the Moab meet. I would like to say I have a solution for the unfairness, but' I don't. Possibly a run-off meet could be held for the fourth and fifth place boys from all regions and the second place relay teams. It could be held at mid-week before the state meet. It would make the state meet better because the "real best" of the crop would be there. Visiting coaches were highly complimentary about the facilities at Moab and the general management of the meets, golf, tennis and track. One reason for the success is the generous amount of time donated by local people as judges, timers and so on. They also comprise ' about the most knowledgeable and competent crew in the state. You only have to go to another meet to see the difference. I |
